Default Engine/valve noise after oil change

Hi guys,

the search seems a bit rubbish now and I can't seem to find what I could a few months ago.

Basically I changed to millers 5w40 fully synth oil, previous oil was 10w40 from Honda as far as I know.

When the car is warm and idling-2krpm I can hear a distinctive tack tack tack from the valve cover area, if I sit in the car with the door open it can also be heard.

It's defo not TCT as I have replaced recently, clearences aren't due for another 15k miles.

Any ideas what it could be and would going to a 10w40 semi synthetic or a 10w30 fully synth possible cure it?

My thinking is the 5w40 is to thin?

Car is a 03 ap1 with 62k on the clock.

Cheers Rob

I just changed my oil with regular chevron 10/30 as the manual calls for, no issued of any type. I adjusted my valves 1000 miles ago and it made a terrific difference, in smoothness, torque, and noise...especially at start up.

The reason Im kind of thinking it's not clearences is that when cold the engine is very quiet no ticking or noise at all!

Cheers

I had the same thing happen when I went to Royal Purple 10W-30. I had a very slight and random ticking noise that could be heard only at idle once the car was warmed up. I switched back to Amsoil 10W-30 2 oil changes ago, and never heard the tick again.

I have had different results with each oil I've tried. Go back to your previous oil and see if it goes away.

Problem is I've no idea what was in previously as it was the previous owner that had it serviced.

What logicially is a thicker oil when warmed up as it seems the oil is to thin?

Thanks

Try changing to any 10W-30 oil that is popular within the community, i.e. Amsoil

My car used to be somewhat loud given I only had 33k miles when I was running mobil1 10-30. Changed to amsoil SSO 0-30 and to my disbelief it has never been quieter and smoother

Why did you use a 40 oil? Honda calls for 30.

If you don't know what was in the car before, it was probably 10W-30 not 10W-40.

Would a 30 not make it tick even more when warm? being a thinner grade at operating temprature?

The owners manual states 10w40 which is why i presumed thats what honda used
