What does the 6 inch dead end pipe do thats just after the cat?

i think its there to balance out the exhaust.

I thought it was a big ole handle for me to hold on to to carry it away after I put on another exhaust

Take a look under some vehicles. Example is the Crown Vic. There are cylinder weights hanging off the sides of the exhaust.
