Final Drive Questions...
I was doing some "virtual testing" today on GT3 regarding the final drive ratios. I consistently found that by shortening the ratio from 4.1 to 4.30, 4.44, and 4.70 (btw, these are the J's final drive ratios), I was consistently slower and slower in the 1/4 mile!
I always thought that I would 'accelerate' faster and thus improve my 1/4 mile times...and I know my top speed will be less, but we don't hit top speed during a 1/4 mile, so I'm not sure why the car is 'slowing down' for all intents and purposes!
I don't get it -- can anyone explain?

It's a video game.
'Nuff said.
In drag racing there's many dynamics involved, from the amount and duration of tirespin at launch all the way through the average amount of forward thrust once hooked up. As long as you didn't have to shift into fifth I would imagine an increase in the numerical final drive ratio would improve acceleration and 1/4 mile ETs, since you wouldn't have to add that extra shifting time.
As good as the GT3 game engine may be, reality is far more complex.

maybe your getting alot of tire spin..
cause in the real world the car would accelerate quicker
also 4.70 might be a bit tall, by the end of the quater mile you might have to shift into 5th gear, but with your other two options you should be fine
if this was reality and not a game
Even with 4.70, I don't think you'd reach 5th gear. Quarter mile times should improve with a final gear increase as long as there isn't an extra shift. As I remember on GT2, you have to launch just right to get "the best" time possible for a given car. With the final drive change, the car has more torque, so try launching at a slightly lower rpm than stock and see what you get.
