Thumbs up First accidental downshift over-rev

Can't friggin' believe it.............. passing someone on one of my favorite (and well known) twisties close to home......... at about 8.5K in third, went to grab fourth and somehow grabbed second.............. all happened very quickly - rear tire drag/hop, quite a bit of exhaust noise (nothing abnormal, just that the HKS was screamin'), no idea what rpm I hit, but obviously I got back into 3rd ASAP.

I am guessing there is no set answer to this question, but thought I'd try anyway:

How soon (or how long) before I know if this has seriously negatively affected the valvetrain? I imagine some guys get an instant hit, while others see it later on down the road. FWIW, this is an AP1, and I drove the remainder of the road (5 miles) as if nothing had happened (i.e. mostlly up past vtec crossover).

Any way I can find out that max RPM the motor has seen? I do have an OBDII setup on my laptop which I have used to troubleshoot emmissions related issues on my daily driver ('97 Toyota Tacoma).

Appreciate any constructive responses, especially from those who have done this themselves,

-Mark

Seems like you need to take the valve cover off and examine the retainers. There's ton's of posts about it here. Too many to cover it again.

You've got an AP1 with 4.77 gears, right? If you are more or less accurate about being at 8500 rpm at the time you hit second from 3rd, you would have taken the engine speed as high as 11,950 rpm. It has been said that this engine can briefly hit 10,500 without too much damage. You exceeded this by about 500 rpm. Feeling lucky?

did you fully let the clutch out or put it back in when you heard the excessive noise?

Thanks, I'll do a good search - was hoping there was a sticky. Valve cover removal is easy enough. First time opening up an OHC motor at all - used to old school OHV American iron.

I depressed the clutch, of course, then put up in 3rd................ but by then I hade already fully released the clutch - when rowing the gears you're disengaging and engaging the clutch for fractions of a second.

OK - found some great pics in my search - believe I know what to look for (I DO know what a spring retainer is).

You will need a VERY thin dental mirror to fit it between the coils of the springs. My mirror isn't small enough.

Check your valve clearances while you're in there, it's VERY easy on this motor.

Good Luck.

Pocono tomorrow and Tuesday.
