Default First gear whine

When I am coasting with the clutch pressed in, and the gear selector in first, there is a loud whine. But as soon as I take the gear selector out of first, the whine will go away.

I think it sounds kinda cool, but it's not cool if something is wrong right? I've had an s2000 before this one, but I can't remember if it did that or not.

So what causes that whine in first? It won't happen if I put the gear selector in any other gear, only first.

Thanks.

The whine changes pitch with how fast the car is moving, but not with rpms.

the first thing to do(cheapest), would be to replace the tranny oil. you'll talk to most s2k owners that will say makes plenty of noises(whines, groans, rattles) the list can go on. so yeah, before you should start worrying, replace the fluid, than go from there. how many miles are on it?

47k, I bought it last week. So no idea when the fluid was last changed.

How fast are you going when you do it? Its probably just the back wheels spinning the first gear really fast making a whine. I dont know if that would be detrimental or not to the transmission though.

Doesn't matter what speed it is, it always happens. Just when speed is increased the whine will get higher pitched.

So I will coast at 10mph, put the gear selector in first while the clutch is pressed, the whine will start. As the car slows down the whine deepens in tone.

It sounds pretty cool.

Oh yeah, then if I shift really fast from first to second while the the clutch is pressed, I hear this loud grinding sound. Then if I drop the clutch while revving the engine to redline, I hear a super loud Pop and crack sound as well. That sound is really cool too!

So any problems there?

Up to here I'm thinking : sounds normal to me.
(allthough it's impossible to diagnose sound with words)
Just a worried owner

But then I'm reading this:
