Default First Oil Change

I have a new 2008 S2000 and despite going through the manual numerous times, I have not been able to find a section that talks about the first oil change. I have read some threads about there being "break in oil" in the car when it leaves the lot and that it needs to stay in the car for a longer interval than normal oil. Is this true? If so, when should I replace the break in oil? I was at the dealership, and I asked one of the service guys about this. He said that the car does NOT come with a special break in oil when it is new and that I should just go by the recommendation on the dash (I am at about 2270 miles and 60% oil life).

Sure you can go by the maintence minder and no harm will be done. Some will say wait longer some will not. I changed mine at 3k with a good conventional oil then at 6k I went to a full synthetic and change it about every 5k which ends up being about once a year for me. I have no oil consumption issues at all and I have 21k on the car. The car gets driven.

It's a myth. IIRC, the initial fill has a higher moly count due to the grease used during engine assembly.

I believe this is correct. Wait till 5-7k (should be inline with your oil indicator), change it with dino, swap in synthetic your first change after 10k, and every 5k+ after that. Oil changes every 3k are a waste of money.

Says who.

I do what works for me. You do what works for you. There is no right or wrong here as long as you change your oil within what is considered reasonable and within the Mfgr's warranty.

Please do not listen to the 5K posts above. I have no idea where they pull that number from.

Just listen to the maintenance indicator and let it go to 5% on the first one.
It will be closer to 10k miles so don't be worried.

You don't want to use a synthetic based oil during the few thousand miles (5K) to allow for the rings/seal to break in.

After that switch up to synthetic and change every 5-6K, depending on your driving conditions/climate etc.
