Default Flywheel Finish

I am going to get my stock flywheel turned tonight. I have a questions though, does anyone know what kind of finish is recommended, i.e., mirror, rough??

I was asked this by the guy that is going to do it. He does a lot of work on dirt track and dragsters. If I remember right, on my miata we did an almost mirror finish.

Any suggestions?

Every time I have had it done (including the one today) I had a kind of swirl pattern, not a mirror. The race shop that does machining never gave me an option so I didn't know I could get a mirror. What would be the advantage?

I have no idea....I was hoping that someone would no. I am guessing that a little rougher finish (swirling) might have a better grip on the clutch disk. That is my guess though.

Do you have to break in a brand-new flywheel?

u dont want a rough finish. it should a smooth surface where you can see the pattern of the cut on the flywheel.

I talked to him more when I dropped it off last night. He was telling me that sometimes he does a rough finish so you can hear when the clutch is broken in. I got a smooth finish.

If you look at this pic with high res you can see the pattern, although it is smooth to the touch. I think it is just a matter of how they reduce the pressure on the grinder. Mine needed very little and the operator had it on the grinder for just a few minutes.

I am always impressed with the look of Toda's S2000 flywheel.

Does the Toda FW not come with a proper surface from the factory? I am assuming this is a new FW, since the sticker is still on it.
