Default Fuel filter

I realised this has been discussed before but I've heard something new and wanted to clarify it with those in the know.

I always thought the one and only fuel filter was the sock on the end of the fuel pump (A). I got into a discussion with a guy who believes there is filtering material in plastic casing (B). Anyone know which is correct?

I want to say that I remember reading that there's an actual filter attached to the pump itself, other than the sock, but that it's not really a regular service item.

There is a fuel filter built into the upper housing, beyond the "sock" which is just a pre-filter against larger particles. In North America it isn't a well known detail as the parts are designed to last the life of the vehicle, and only changed if you develop low fuel pressure issues ( though I'd probably change mine if and when I replace my fuel pump, as I don't want to go in there more than one time).

For some reason in Australia I've heard that Honda dealers advise owners to change the fuel filter on a regular basis, which sounds like an expensive proposition to me. I want to say that the Australian fuel filter change interval sounds like a bit of overkill, but there may be an underlying issue with fuel quality in your country which we aren't familiar with?

Thanks for that guys. Seems I'm having humble pie for lunch.
