Default gas cap 101

hey i think this belongs here but if it doesn't please move it!

well i got a CEL for the 2nd time today and i believe it is due to a loose gas cap (car just came out of storage). so i tightened the gas cap and resetted the ecu and everything is fine now. i had my first CEL about a year ago and it was a loose gas cap issue as well. usually i screw the gas cap to the point where i hear at least 5 clicks (even though the manual says 3 clicks should be sufficient). but i still miraculously had a seemingly loose gas cap. i dunno if it's due to the construction going on around the roads here -- bumps and potholes resulting in a loose gas cap, or if it's due to me lacking gas cap screwing skills. any insight!? should i shoot for 10 clicks or is that overkill?!

thanks in advanced

You could also have a bad filler neck that won't allow the gas cap to hold firm.

Or the CEL could be something completely unrelated to the pas cap. PULL THE CODE!!!
I do recall seeing a couple of posts a while back about both defective caps and bad fill necks. 3 clicks = 300 clicks =300,000 clicks BTW.

I've not had this problem. What I do is give the cap a good 1/4 turn after it seats. Xviper could be right about the filler neck. I'd say, look at the cap itself.

I'd like to add one question here if I may. Has anyone used a locking gas cap on the S2000, or any Honda car for that matter? If so, did it cause any CEL issues? I tried buying one from the dealer but they don't sell them. They did say that I could probably find one at the local chain parts store but they couldn't guarantee whether or not it would cause any problems.

Sorry for the brief highjack here! Hope you find your problem.

Drive Safe,
Steve R.

I've had a locking gas cap for about 5 years. Never a CEL. Works quite well. I bought mine from our local "Canadian Tire" store. You may have to look at an equivalent shop like Autozone or Pepboys, etc. You can ask for a locking gas cap for other Hondas and take your S cap in to compare threads.

I had a locking gas cap, albeit an old one. Sometimes it gave me a CEL so I ditched it and went back to stock, no problems since.

cel didn't come back on after a few driving trips so i'm quite sure that it was due to the loose cap

perhaps i'll check out this locking gas cap

good thing canadian tire exists in toronto lol

I think what he means is that although the manual states you should turn the gas cap till it clicks (rachets) at least 3 times, if you have a defective gas cap or defective filler neck, it doesn't matter how many times you "click it".
