Default Gear box / transmission whining noise..

Just thought that i would share this with the community and get some feed back about what happened

It started off as a very soft whining noise at high speeds.. something that you could bearly hear.. As time went on it got worse and happened at low speeds too. The sound would be proportional to the car's speed.
The sound came from the transmission 100% Gear changes remain unaffected.
Gear box fluid was changed at services and was topped up 100%
I pulled out the gear box and had it checked out...
Here are the culprits...

These bearings came off the secondary shaft on the output transmission.
On closer inspection you can see the terrible damage...

and

I've ordered the new parts from Honda Australia at $150 the lot..

What caused it??

I have no idea.. and im scared! My mate who pulled apart the box seems to think its a manufacturing fault and possibly a defective bearing.. Then i showed it to a bearing speacialist and he seems to think it was heated up too much and had an 'oil starvation'.

What should i do/check before putting it all back together?
Any help would be great!
Thanks

First : Im not bearing specialist but I've seen bearings that have been to hot.
And they turned blue.
Your bearings aren't blue from heat (as far as the pictures show) so I would bet my $$ on oil starvation.
Especially the 3rd picture...
Get the low pressure gear box oil pump checked out.
And maybe do as others have done : over fill the tranny by 200 ml or so.
(jack the car up at the filler plug side and get a little more oil in)
What transmission oil did you use?
(and what are you going to use now?)

Succes!

The damaged bearing is the highest bearing in the trans. It doesn't sit in oil, but is fed oil from internal oil pump.

I would also suspect low oil level in the past. I know of at least 3 other S2k's that have had the same bearing damaged.

In Europe all MY00 gearboxes were subject to a recall to replace an inadequate oil pump. Here in the States (don't know about Australia) it was said we do not have the driving conditions to mandate the change (kind of like the banjo bolt decision).

It may be that the car has been driven extended periods at high speed and this defect just caught you.

Unfortunatly the lifespan of bearings is likened to light bulbs and human life: Some live really long and some die young - then there is the average life expectancy.
The galling(Pitting) on one bearing may have caused the scoring on the other.
Galling can come from a defect in the metal upon manufacture, I have seen races and rollers just drop a chunk of metal off because it couldnt handle the stress because of an impurity in the metal.

That being said, my tranny failed a long time ago, and when honda said I was abusing the car I set out to learn all about bearings and this tranny. I can't speak for the newer tranny's but the original ones (the 1 I had, 2 still have) were not able to scavange oil fast enough to keep up at 80+ mph, then if you were to turn left the oil pressure drops off completly, I posted video's of a tranny low pressure oil gauge in action(between 5 and 8 PSI). Not sure what happened to them or if anyone has them still(I do) The furthest bearing from the pump is in the first gear, the one that went on mine.

You said it was the secondary . . .output shaft.

So one was on each? Just curious as to exactly where, because if not on the tail of the output shaft then they were right next to the pump, and you probably got a bum bearing.

Thanks for all your feed back guys!

From what i remember the bearings are off the actual shaft.
The car is just on 100k now and i dont really drive all that hard.
Im hoping its just a dud bearing. Should i take any steps in cleaning out the transmission before re-assembling?

That's like 70K us Miles right? Looks like oil starvation to me. Either that or contamination. If that happened to me, I'd just assume normal wear and tear, fix it and drive on. Did you inspect any of the other bearings on the main and countershafts?

Humm
i've filled it up to the brim and also had the car serviced a few times..
Im hoping it was just bearing malfunction.
Come time to fill it up again i'll do that trick and jack up the car on an angle and fill it up.

Is there something i should do first to get rid of the contaminates in the transmission before filling up with the new oil?
