Default Got a noob question for shifting and rev limiter

Sorry to ask such a noobish question but this is my first manual car and i know nothing about it but have been spending time of the forums to learn, but on to the question.

Is it of any harm to be doing about 75 in 6th and then drop to 4th to gain some acceleration?

No... at 75mph, you could do a 6 to 3 downshift. Just rec match and you'll be fine.

Just please don't do a 6-1 downshift. The rev limiter won't help you there!

Nice avatar Tenblade.

agree... 6-1 = hosed! try the 6-4 first, get comfortable with this and rev matching, then go 6-3.
Thanks Raj!

slowing down for a corner and doing 6-5-4-3-2 while rev matching the whole way down is pretty fun, too

WATCH OUT FOR THE 6-2 MISSHIFT. Many people when trying to downshift to 4th tend to pull the gear selector towards them and down. It ends up in 2nd, and you don't want to go there at 75mph. Take your time and let the gear selector center naturally in the box, then pull straight back.

It's best not to skip gears for the sake of the syncros but it's common practice.

Chtree,
I thought if you rev matched, it was fine. Am I wrong? Second question for you guys, is it just as hard on your diff to do a downshift, like 6-4 or 6-3 (with rev match), as a 5K clutch drop?

In order to prevent problems, I would recommend not attempting a 6-4 downshift. It may become a VERY expensive escapade. I'd go for the 6-5-4 downshift just to be easy on your wallet. Now, the 4-6 upshift, I'd do that. I tend to skip on the upshifts and never skip on the downshifts.

I was taught that a long time ago......I almost always run the gears sequentially.

Of course I remember double clutching into first cause they didn't have 1st gear synchromesh way back then in my Sunbeam.
