Default Grinding on Cold Start

Whenever I start up my car for the first time in the morning for about a second I hear some horrible grinding noise from the start I am guessing. Can anyone confirm this? I would like to get it taken care of asap. It only does it that one time that I start it up in the morning and is done for the rest of the night.

Don't worry about it; it might just be the most common issue on all S2000's. You can do a quick search for "starter grind" in this forum and find hundreds of people with the same issue. It is the starter remaining in contact with the flywheel after the car cranks and it spins the starter quickly for a half second. Not detrimental to your car; I would learn to live with it (as we all have).

If you really want to fix it, replace your starter. I tried lubing the shaft that the starter gear glides on with no success. Starter replacement seems to be the only guaranteed way to stop this, but it won't last fovever. It will likely return on your new starter.

Thank you very much, yes I have lived with it for about 8 months now and just wanted to make sure it was not causing any damage.

Actually you don't have to live with it - you can 'service' the starter motor or swap it out for a reconditioned one. I took mine completely to bits, degreased and cleaned all the parts then regreased it and reassembled it - not had an issue since doing that. It's impossible to get grease into the correct part of the starter assembly without dismantling it.

Mine does the same thing for years now! Annoying but doesn't bother me much anymore. I have a supercharger and still hear it loud and clear on start ups lol
