Default grinding flywheel as part of clutch replacement?

I have a Spec Star Stage III clutch that is going to be put in my car and instructions say to have the flywheel resurfaced....is that standard?

What if I don't? I now have to not only get a good shop to install, but find a machine shop that has a flywheel grinder in the DC area....

Suggestions??

Yeah, you really should get it resurfaced. There's likely a ton of material left over from the old clutch still on the flywheel and pressure plate, so a resurfacing will really help with bedding the clutch. As I understand it, if you got the carbon clutch, it's not strictly necessary - but it's absolutely necessary with the kevlar.

I got the carbon one. Thanks for the response, I called Star and they said it should be done for proper clutch operation, but didn't say it was absolutely a necessity. I was hoping that one place could do both, I guess I will have to keep looking. Doesn't look like too may garages or dealers have a flywheel grinder, and you can't just use a rotor lathe as that will cause chatter.

true, but there goes another 4-5hundred dollars and a resurfacing should be almost nothing, it takes 3-5 minutes is all. I had thought about a new fly wheel, but didn't want to have to work so hard to keep the revs up. Maybe I should reconsider.

I am sure Schatten can get you one. Or....

As far as Toda goes, I have heard you pay more for the name (As I do not own one this could be translated into my humbled opinion). Sure it supposedly the lightest flywheel (8.4lb versus 8.5lbs or something like that). The Comptech is $440, Toda's are usually around the $480 mark. Check all of them out before you get one... Toda, Spoon, Comptech and decide for yourself!!! I am about ready to do my TSB and I have been looking into flywheels for a while now... My vote would be for the Comptech.

Just my humbled opinion...

I installed a Toda flywheel and consider it one of the better changes I have made to the car. Your major expense with the clutch is the labor and I would suggest you not pass on this opportunity to leverage the expense to make this very effective mod.

fyi - comptech's list price on their flywheels are $419, and will not be available until the 15th of June. otherwise... Spoon flywheels are an option at the moment.
