The battery, heater hoses, platic water valve get a lot hotter, maybe even melt. Why do you want to take it out? Some Big $ engineer thought it was a pretty good idea.

Which heatshield are you talking about? The Big black one between the battery and exhaust manifold, or the one on the manifold directly? If it's causing a rattle, the bolts aren't tight, or the shield is broken. Somehow I don't think your rattle is going away after removing it.

As long as all the bolts are tight, and the shield isn't contacting anything, It shouldn't be a cause for any noise.

The big black one can be bent to stop most rattling. Also, make sure all the bolts are tight. When I put on the header, all the heat shields on the stock header disappeared. I "think" the engine bay temps went up afterwards and during the summer, I found it somewhat alarming. This compelled me (OK, gave me an excuse then) to get a vented CF hood.

If you look on the rear side towards the battery you will notice a pin like object near the heatshield.
I would think if anything that it could be the cause to the rattling noise.
On my car I can see scratch marks on my heatshield due to contact. Although I do not hear any kind of rattling sounds due to this, a rubber stopper of some sort might do the trick.

A good idea would be to do what sebring said and check for areas of contact. That will lead to the source and find something to bend or dampen it.
