Having problems checking oil....am I stupid?

I disagree. I consistantly have to refill with a 5 quart jug + about 1/2 of a 1 quart bottle. This will depend on how warm the engine is, how level it is, and how long you let it drain.

I think he was close to a quart low right after the oil change, then used about a quart.

How many miles were on it when you switched to synthetic?

If there is NO OIL on the XXXX, there CAN'T POSSIBLY BE TOO MUCH OIL.

Much thanks everybody for your input.

The switch to synthetic was made at 34K miles. I bought it used. I'm going to take enzyme's suggestion and do a complete oil change just to be sure. This brings up another concern.

I tried to do an oil change myself last time using a jack and two jack stands. When I jacked the car up using the "L-brackets" under the car, it made these strange creaking sounds every now and then. I didn't feel comfortable getting underthe car even with jack stands, because I like my head more than 4 inches high.

Is it equally safe just to use ramps instead of jack stands?

Actually you'll need a ramp to jack up your car. My Sears 3-ton Floor jack is too tall and I made myself a ramp out of 2X12's.

There are two (2) jack points for Floor jacks..... Rear = Rear differential
Front = middle of engine between front wheels.

Do not use the support points on side of car unless you use the provided Cheesy jack in your trunk. The "L" supports are for Lifts and Jack Stands

I'd think that it would be more safe provided that you put on the emergency brake and put something under the rear tires to ensure that the car doesn't roll (if the emergency brake should give way). The trick is to find ramps that will fit under the front bumper.

One thing that I'm curious about is the "bend" in your dipstick. My dipstick is perfectly straight.

Really?, mine definitely has a double kink in it a few inches above the x's.

Maybe the 'OO's came with kinks. I sure as heck know they came with bugs.

Never mind. Mine does have the little "Z" above the Xs. I thought you were saying it was bent below the Xs.

Have not heard that one - the greatest danger I know of from overfilling is that the crankshaft whips air into the oil (windage), and foamed oil is a terrible lubricant.

Actually, some cars are deliberately rated low in the their oil capacity, and the reason is quite intersting to me. Cars that have high fleet saleability (like Tauruses, Grand Ams, etc) often spec their oil capacity low. Why? Because fleet buyers figure maintenance TCO (total cost of operations) into their sales decisions, and with enough cars, the diff between 6 and 6.5 quearts can be a go/nogo decision maker.

In some cars, I have deliberately added a bit more oil, revving the engine for 30 secs, and then checking for oil bubbles on the dipstick.

With the S2000, I would be unlikely 5to overfill it with a 8-9K redline.
