Default Helicoil Question

Hey guys I have a question I stripped my #1 oil jet bolt and I have to re tap it and re thread the bolt. I bought the helicoil kit that says 5/16th-24 and I also bought a dye kit and it came with some re threading things and the 5/16th-24 that came with that one is a different size. So I'm not really sure which one is the right one. the one on the bottom seems right but the one on the top is the helicoil one. I figure I should use the one that came with the dye kit what do you guys think? Thanks.

The tap that came with the kit is sized to cut threads for the 5/16-24 insert, not bolt. You need a helicoil kit to match the threads of the hole you stripped.

I suppose it would. What's the original diameter of the bolt? 5/16" is right at 8mm diameter, which sounds reasonable for that hole.

The tap that came with the helicoil kit, should be used to tap the hole the helicoil goes in to. It will be larger than 5/16-24. The 5/16-24 tap that you bought seperately, would probably screw cleanly into the helicoil.

I never ever touched the oil bolts before, but aren't they metric?

yes they're metric, but he probably couldn't find a metric helicoil kit, so he got an SAE one. IT's acceptable, but can be a hassle if ever working on it again. In this case, shouldn't be an issue.

You won't be able to retap the metric oil jet bolt to 5/16-24.

Get a metric helicoil kit

Absolutely. You need the metric helicoil. Don't ghetto up the car.

Use a metric helicoil. I can't see one reason to use a 5/16"

The heli-coil tap is larger as it is tapping the hole for a threaded insert. If you are unsure the helicoil tap should also say STI on the side as it is for a screw thread insert. Definitely stay metric to avoid any confusion down the road. Good Luck.
