I was replacing my striker plate so I removed the plastic for passenger side A-pillar and found a loose wire that was cut. I traced it to the driver side fuse box area and found what's in the pictures. So the cable split into a black ground wire and a black and red wire that goes to this clear plastic thing with a spring inside.

Anybody know what this might be? Thanks.

 

That's not stock so could be pretty much anything, the clear plastic thing looks a fuse holder.

Yeah I know it's not stock otherwise it would be very easy to figure out. I have never seen spring in a fuse holder though.

 

They are not that uncommon.
You said it was three wires? One to ground, one fused battery power and then something else, could you see where that goes?

 

Yep, that is a fuse holder for glass fuses. Extremely common 10+ years ago. For those that have never owned a car pre 90's or so, they had glass cartridge style fuses and that is an add on fuse holder for one of those. No telling what it was for though. Aftermarket auto dimming mirror maybe? Since it was run up the a-pillar.

 

I'll bet that was for a valentine 1 hardwired setup.

 

Yeah, radar detector, I agree.

While those glass fuses went away a long time ago, they're still used in a lot of aftermarket add on kits. I bought a radar detector amplified speaker (to hear above stereo, plugs into detectors earphone jack), and kit included a power wire with same exact type of spring loaded glass fuse holder.

So I wouldn't be surprised if a remote mount radar detector kit wouldn't also still be including that outdated fuse holder.

 

I have memories of those fuse holders back "in my day" and taking them apart to have the fuse fly under the dash because I was not holding it well lol. I also have a bunch of those fuses but no cars that use them anymore!

Flanders, it looks like the wire goes to ignition switch harness. Hmm I didn't notice the duct tape to the right of all the fuses until looking at the pictures I took. I am going to check again tomorrow. It's weird because I see the same thing from other people's under dash pictures as well.
