Default Help Me With Oil.

Hi,

Some of you may remember that I had my short block replaced about 3 months ago. Well, now I've put about 3000 miles on the new block, yet my engine keeps drinking oil. I have to add about 1 - 1 1/2 quarts every month. What is going on with my engine? Is it still breaking in? Will the oil consumption ever stop? Thanks in advance!

Was this a new Honda block? It's common for them to drink oil up to 10,000 miles. That's one reason it's not recommended to switch to synthetic oil until this period has passed.

Yes, a new Honda block. I've changed the oil to Synblend. Thx!

How many miles do you put on in one month? This may have some bearing on whether or not your consumption is out of the ordinary. 1.5 quarts over 3000 miles is not so bad. 1.5 qts over 1000 miles is. DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS when you ask a question.

Also, you perhaps should not have gone to even a sythetic blend so soon. Your rings will take quite a bit longer to seat properly. You really should wait till the oil consumption stabilizes at a low rate before using synthetic. It won't do any harm but you will never know if it's because there is something wrong with your engine or if it's because the consumption is due to the synthetic.

What is your oil change interval? 3 qts is no big deal if you're going with a 7500 miles interval. 3 qts for a 3000 miles might be at the top end of normal and may be consider excessive. You should try going back to dino oil till the consumptions decreases.

Dino oil?

I just installed AEM intake and i've been vtec'in a little more... so it's getting close to 3 1/2 qts....

3.5 qts in that many miles can be considered excessive. "Dino" as opposed to synthetic. Your car may be the prime reason why Honda says to not go with synthetic till at least a certain mileage. I can't remember exactly but I think it's something like 10,000 miles.
Synthetic makes it such that your rings take a lot longer to seat. Not all cars need this time frame with dino oil as those cars may have a good seal to begin with. In your case, Honda was right on the money. You should have listened. It's still not too late to go back and run dino oil for the next while till your oil use goes down.

Mr. Xviperman, I don't mean to be rude in any way, but watchu talkin about? You obviously have overlooked my first post. I indicated that I put about 3000 miles on it in 3 months, so that would come to 1000/month on average. As a result, I stated 1 - 1.5 qts per month, which means every 1000 miles on average.

To be honest, I didn't really changed to synthetic blend. At first, I changed to dino oil, but since it kept getting consumed, I kept adding synblend in it. So in all, there's some syn blend in it, but still mostly dino oil in there.

Well, thanks for all your inputs. I'll keep an eye on it. If it becomes excessive, I'll have it checked out. But at this point, I don't think it's TOO bad yet.
