Do you skip shift?

IE, wind out say 2nd or 3rd gear and then go right into 5th/6th without putting it into the other gears?

A missed shift to third that hit fifth can mess up the syncros that work for 5/6. I would try to force it into sixth (it will be difficult and may take many tries) and then work through the gears until it loosens up. If it it is not too badly damaged the ragged surfaces will wear to allow acceptable performance.

Downshifting is fine to skip gears (i.e. going from 6th to third) it is just good to rev match

Ya, I was going to say I've been downshifting manual cars for 12 years now and haven't had a single problem skipping a gear during a downshift.

Now to the problem at hand. Try driving in 5th, put it in neutral and let off the clutch, push in the clutch, then going into sixth.

skip shifting when down shifting is fine.

DO NOT skip shift when UPshifting on this car. you'll damage the synchros.

if you can't get it into 6th, then time to take it to the dealership. and it aint gonna be cheap.

Not necessarily true.. I know of three (one being mine) transmissions where the synchro was damaged preventing use of 6th where function was restored by forcing the shift (in my case it took two days and dozens of attempts) and then repeating the 5 - 6 change.
that's why i said if he can't get it into 6th. in other words, if he can't do what you stated.
