help with warranty
I just called the honda dealer where i brought my02, he told me that i had bent intake valves in #3 and 4 cyc... I asked him about the warranty and he said it wouldn't be covered.... he then told me to call the honda 800#, does anyone have any information and advice before i call???

with honda, the age of the driver is a big consideration. If you're under 25, you're probably screwed. They may give you the benefit of the doubt if you're in your late 20s+.
valves don't bend themselves. I would try to find out if the retainers are cupped, causing valve mis-adjustment and maybe a dropped valve. This has happened to a few. If the retainers are fine, I don't know what to tell you.

Untill you get a decision from Honda on the matter I would not start posting here about what you may or may not have done to cause this. Word is they monitor these boards and based on location and circumstances they could put 2+2 together and use it against your case. Good luck.

nope no miss shift,,, everything was fine, when i pulled into the drive way it started running like crap, i parked it and that was it,,
i called honda usa and they took my info and said they would get back to me,, i'll call them agian in the mornin...

any update on the situation, I have the exact same problem. The CEL came on, I drived my car normally on friday and didn't drive saturday, then come sunday the CEL came on and went to the dealer and they told me that I bent intake valve in cylinder 4. I'm waiting for the local dealership to give me a call back to let me know that if is covered under warranty and when I asked the employee who was helping he said it would be most likely covered under the warranty. Let me know how your situation comes out. thanks
Make sure what problems you have exactly, what symthoms (sp?) and such and then do some research and see if anyone else has the same problem. This happened to me just 2 months ago. Long story short, Honda is quick to jump on the bent valve its your fault theory. After much research on my own mainly from this board (thanks guys) I had found that I had similar problems with a faulty map sensor. Well I mentioned that to the dealer and they had told me at first that that was not the case, they checked everything. etc etc... still explaining after a leakdown test and compression test that they still think its a bent valvue due to me over reving, which I never did. Well 3 days later they finally call me back, um your cars fixed, the map sensor had to be replaced and the valves had to be readjusted. Talk about a relief. So the point of this story is that, make sure you know what your problems are and research similar cases. See the dealer goes by what honda tech tells them from problems they tell them . Its hard for a honda tech to know whats really going on if they cant physically see the car, well thats what I think anyways. Good luck to both you. Just ask questions and find solutions, and be calm with them.

Here's Honda's position: Those valves will not drop/bend by themselves. In other words - there's a reason they eventually dropped, and that reason is an over-rev.
One misconception is that the damage from an over-rev will reveal itself immediately. Many times it won't.
You can over-rev your engine and there be no apparent damage. However the damage is in fact there - in the form of dished valve spring retainers. This type of damage will slowly allow your valves to slip further and further until at some unpredictable mileage down the road - your engine will drop one or several valves without warning or apparent reason.
The fact of the matter is you or someone else who has driven your car over-reved your engine at some point in the past causing the damage that ultimately resulted in bent valves. Honda will not warranty this unless you can prove it was a Honda employee that over-reved your motor. Good luck.
For those who believe they may have over-reved their motors, get a qualified Honda Mechanic to inspect your motor's Valve Spring Retainers. The process takes about an hour more than a valve adjustment to complete and involves removing your cams.
Jeff Goetz at Ganley Honda is a good POC for this procedure. It costs about $375 in labor for the inspection and gives you a piece of mind worth many times that amount.
