Default Hit lip in road - what should I check?

Hi everyone,

I was driving along at 75 mph on the freeway and a rather large lip between road surfaces showed up in front of me. I did not react as I should have (slowing down and taking it with a rake so it goes on wheel at a time) and went over the damn thing at full speed. The front wheels went over with out incident but when the back wheels hit it sounded like someone hit my frame members with a sledgehammer: this god awful loud crack which seemed to come from the right side filled the cabin. :-( My poor car.

My theories about this incident are as follows:

1) I hit the bump stomps - doubt this as it sounded very metallic
2) I don't have any bump stops - this would be sad but the noise seemed right
3) I managed to bottom the chassis out and it scraped on the lip - most likely?
4) Something nasty broke - I sure hope not!

I was just a few miles from home when this happened so I slowed down and checked a few things while driving. The car was riding just fine and does not pull even when stopping with hands off the wheel. There's no funny noises and I can't really tell anything else that is wrong. I did a quicknvisual inspection of the rear end of the car when I got home and didn't see anything wrong.

My question is what should I check to see if I got lucky on this one? What kind of damage would one expect from an event like this?

Thanks!

Tyler

Just check the rear half of the car, axles differential lower control arms check your rims for dents. If the car is driving fine then you lucked out and your car is fine. The last time i hit a bump one of my rear wheels got dented pretty bad on the inside of the wheel so defintely check that.Goodluck sir.

There's the rear cross member that sits kinda low, probably nailed it, it can take a beating without damage really mattering. It is U shaped with the points of the "U" facing downward, sometimes those get bent...won't matter.

Hopefully it's that...or less.
