Default How to Bench Bleed the Master Cylinder & ABS

If you've ever accidentally sucked air into your master cylinder this is what you have to do to get all the air out of the brake system. On the S2000 you can also bench bleed the ABS along with the master cylinder.

Here's my how-to with a pic of the S2000 with the bench bleeding kit hooked up to the ABS. You can also connect to the normal master cylinder output ports to simply bleed the MC.

Thanks for posting. I could've used it a couple weeks ago, though.

Or you could just use a vacuum bleed system and be done in about 5 minutes with no air bubbles.

A vacuum system won't get the air out of the master cylinder without using a couple of gallons of brake fluid, and even then you probably wouldn't get it all. You also run the risk of pulling air into the system, which is similar to what happens with Speed Bleeders with inadequate thread sealant. There's a reason you have to bench bleed when you install a new master cylinder.

The S2000 in the picture also needs to have the throttle cable slack inspected and adjusted.
It looks kinda out of spec.

Nice website

SpitfireS,

I'll check out the throttle cable slack, thanks for noticing.

I don't understand. Does it work with only one abs output ran back to the reservoir or must you run tubing from all 4 abs outputs to the reservoir?

So this is essentially bench bleeding the MC while it's in the car. From the photo on your site it looks like you do one corner at a time. Do you follow any particular sequence? Do you knock the ABS or MC with your hand or anything to try and get more bubble to come out?

This isn't explicitly mentioned in Rob's article but I assume you must do this to each brake line in the order specified by Honda?

does the abs unit still need to be bled if you bench bleed the master cylinder before installing?
