If you mean can the key activate the starter motor, the answer is NO. But you need the key to have the ignition in the ON position before it will start. Once this is ON, you can start the car in one of 2 ways that I know of. 1st you can "bump" start it. ie. Ignition ON, clutch in, tranny in gear (1st or 2nd will do), push the car or roll it down a hill till it's going about maybe 5-10 mph, suddenly let the clutch out. Once it fires up, either continue to drive away or push clutch back in and stop using brakes and the car will still be running. 2nd, use the old mechanics trick of "jumping" the starter solenoid to activate the starter. This was 2 wires with clips on one end and a push button switch on the other. You will still need the key to have ignition ON. There are other ways but they would be somewhat dangerous and I'm not going to be responsible for you getting yourself bent all out of shape.

Maybe you could find a way to hook up one of those clap on, clap off devices to the starter switch! Sorry, couldn't resist!

There is also another way to start the engine without the button that I'm not too familiar with. It involves turning the key and pressing the brakes a certain number of times, then switching the key off and repeating the process. It also does not require the transmitter in the key and you need a certain sequence code that you can get from the dealer. Every car has an indvidual code, so if you get the code from the dealer, it will not work on another s2000.

This process is for someone that has to have a key duplicated from a locksmith. Since duplicating keys does not have the transmitter inside, it is used for emergency purposes only.

Tonky, a good warning indeed. Start the car and buy a new converter. I don't know why vaio wants to know this but if you just "had" to get it started and the button didn't work, I guess he can factor in the price of the converter.

All car manufacturers recommend against bump starting, but I think it's strictly for liability concerns. For instance, if someone were to try to bump start their car but fail, they'd have no power brakes or steering, and if not properly prepared could have an accident. Another possibility is that someone could roll a car over their buddy when being push started. But one little paragraph in the owners manual might save them from a lawsuit.

I feel you'll do less damage to a car by bump starting it than jump starting. Improper jump starting can do a lot of damage.

Personally I had to bump start my car (in reverse, down only a 30ft slope) a few weeks back because the battery ran dry after sitting for only 1 week. It still won't fully charge (little red dot in the middle) It's either the battery or charging system, I'm going to see if the dealer will give me a new one.
