Odd that the mechanical O2 simulator didn't work for you. You're probably the first one to report that this didn't work. I've had mine one for quite a long time now and never a CEL. Did you use 2 of them stacked together? And is the sensor assembly hanging down. It should be at least horizontal or a bit tilted upwards. And you did put the simulator on the sensor in the test pipe, right?
I guess you'll have to try the electronic one.

Here's a dumb question, have you pulled the code to be certain it's for the test pipe? You should have a P0420, maybe a P0138. Another DTC would indicate a seperate problem.

The EGC electronic 02 sim works just fine. It only simulates the 02 output signal, not the heater circuit. You'll need leave the 02 plugged in , or wire a resistor in the heater circuit to keep the CEL out.

Not necessarily. I'm just trying to eliminate some of the more obvious reasons. When you get a UEGO wide band, the instructions do mention to make sure the O2 sensor is at least level and preferably slightly up. I don't know if this is for proper sensor function or if it's AEM's way of making you don't lob off the sensor when you drive down the road.
Slow also has some good points.

hmmm...ya I guess you already saw my thread on the mechanical simulator...strange that it didn't work for you...I've been running this since August and still no CEL, I would also check to make sure that this is the correct CEL that you are getting and not for something else...if this isn't working for you...then well check and make sure that you did everything the right way...and if you did...then I guess you are stuck with having to get a Electronic
