Default How much oil is too much?

Hi all,

I bought a 5.5qt bottle of oil and, out of haste, forgot to measure out 5 qts. Should I be concerned about the extra 1/2 quart of oil? I searched to see if this was answered, but couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance.

Just out of curiosity, where did you buy a 5.5 quart jug from? Those big bottles usually hold 5 quarts of oil.

But to answer your question, usually an oil/filter change is ~5.1 quarts. Check the dipstick....if its way above the full mark, you can drain some and put yourself at ease. If you're 1 x over, don't worry about it.

I just picked it up at my local pepboys. It looks like this:

I'll keep an eye out on the oil level, hopefully nothing goes wrong.

IF you dont drain it to the correct level, when it gets really hot in there...it will expand, and if you have to much in the engine it will find the weakest part of the engine (seals) and blow them out. You have to remember oil expands under heat and pressure.

From what I understand, If you overfill and drive the car hard, the crank causes foaming of the oil. When this occurs, the oil doesn't do it's job (which is lubricating the engine), and can possibly cause damage.

I overfilled mine a while back and xviper explained this to me. It is a good idea to drain out the excess! Hope this helps!

Mine takes 5.8 quarts to fill after the oil change. Check your oil and see where you are at.
