to install 5mm spacers, do i need extended studs?

If you have 5mm of stud sticking out the back of your lug nuts, you shouldn't need long studs. If you have less than 5mm of stud sticking out, I wouldn't use the spacers without longer studs.

sorry but i don't understand, what do you mean by 5mm of stud sticking out the back of my lug nuts?

You should be ok with 5mm. Any more and you really should have longer studs.

I would want substantially all of the threads of my lug nuts attached to threads of the stud, to minimize the possibility of a lug nut working its way loose. You're contemplating moving the wheel 5mm farther away from the hub; prior to doing so, I would want to make sure that I had 5mm of "extra" length in the studs, so that, after doing so, I would still have the entire length of the lug nut attached to threads on the stud.
