Default Installing Cams

I just finished installing my upgraded valve spring retainers and i was going to put the cams back in and was reading the helms manual and it says to put some oil on the threads of the bolts. Anybody do this when they swapped theirs out? Thanks in advance for the help.

That is pretty standard for all of the Honda engine bolts, so yes do it.

Yes, oil the threads.

Installing the cams is kinda tricky, in that they don't seat into the helix teeth/gears right away. You need to slowly and evenly tighten down the caps to make them seat and fully engage.

After the cam install you will want to recheck valve clearances. Manually turning the crank in this process will provide more than enough lubrication before you actually fire her up.

I used assembly lube when I put my [dry] head back together. I think plain oil would do fine for your reassembly.

I always do that too. Even when doing a valve adjustment I will keep the lobes oiled up.

Do you folks use assembly lube when rebuilding major portions of the engine? I've been using Redline stuff since my MX dirt bike days, so many moons ago.

Thanks!

I use Lucas assembly lube on all of my engine builds for customers. It's super sticky and slick and does a very good job preventing wear on cold/dry starts.

I was told to wipe the oil off the head where the cam caps go so it gets torqued properly. Then put some assembly lube where the cams actually sit and a little on top then bolt them down. Sound correct?
