Default Intake filter issue

Hi all,

Has anyone seen this issue with a cold air intake filter? It's a complete ring around the whole filter and it just looks like the filter element/foam is falling apart. I've never seen this before, so I'm kind of stumped. With this new filter, I haven't driven more than 50miles! My guess is that is is just a crappy filter element and I should return it. But is there something else that it could be....?

Cold air intake setup, so silicone elbow -> aluminum piping -> silicone adaptor -> Intake filter.

The intake filter is set right above the TCT and the filter is sadly a cheap-o one. Used it to mock up the cold air intake and just kept it on. I dont think it is melting/burning from the headers as i think I would have more issues if that was happening!

looks like the filter media has melted and shrunk, is that a foam filter media or some kind of dry filter ? Whatever it is the media has deteriorated, I'd say it is heat related and failed in a certain direction it was facing. The better ones are normally cotton guaze oiled media and not affected by heat.

Yeah, my guess was just a crap filter. Thanks for the info.

Above the TCT doesn't seem like a place where cold air is available...

Do you have a splash guard under the engine? I'm guessing this is a turbo car...so probably not?

If the splash guard is gone....maybe the belt slung a bunch of dirty water all over the filter....

No splash guard. It’s been dry/no dirty water or anything that could have contacted the filter. Non turbo currently. I wouldn’t say directly above the TCT. More like in front of it and the engine. Basically where the stock intake box would be. It is getting plenty of fresh air, but I should build a guard for ambient heat coming from the headers.

its massively unlikely that anything got the ambient air hot enough to melt plastic. Especially just concentrated in one band like that.

All those factory plastic parts under the hood would get melted too.

Maybe when you pushed/twisted the filter on, you deformed it slightly and the filter oil puddled in that deformed part. Or the media got distorted.

Yeah. Its just very odd that it is perfectly around the whole filter. My guess is that it is just a crap filter. I'm going to try an AEM or K&N filter. Haven't done the research on the forum yet, but is there a general consensus on dry filter or oiled for these engines?
