Default Intake Idea

So I have been toying around with this idea and would like to get your opinions.

I had a 2002 S2000 and installed a comptech CAI on it. I loved the sound of it, but let's face it with CAI all you are "really" getting is sound and not the HP gains they claim. I would rather not fork another $300 plus for the sound. FYI..The comptech CAI was a plastic box with a carbon fiber lid.

I believe that Honda designed the S2000 air box to cut down on the acoustics. I am sure several of you have at least heard what the car sounds like with out the air box lid on. It has the CAI sound to it.

My idea - I still have the my air box from the 2002. I am thinking of cutting the top portion of the lid out and replacing it with a sheet of 0.015" carbon fiber. I am hoping that the carbon fiber will allow more groan from the intake.

I am hoping that this will give me the sound I am looking for, with a "cool" look, less heat soak, and at a reasonable price!

Do you think it will work, or am i missing somthing? Is there another material besides carbon fiber that would work better?

People have cut the fins on insides of the box and plug up the resonator hole. I'm temped to do that myself. I really dont know how it would sound though. But i agree 300+ for a plastic box is a little too much.

I've read this increases the sound, but not as much as a CAI.

You have the comptech one... since your only going for sound and not horsepower, isn't the comptech doing what you ask?

There are other CAI out there that will give you both hp/sound ie fujita, AEM, injen.

Sell me the OE airbox so I can save it from being butchered and put it to good use.

I had a comptech on my 2002 S. I now have a 2005. I have the air box from my 2002 collecting dust in my garage which will be the one that I "butcher", unless the sale offer you are speaking of is enough to spare it's life

My bad, read it too quick.

FIPK is a good system.. I'm in the works with PRM to try something too, I'm just waiting to here back.

Let me know what you want for your dust collector

1+ For the K&N FIPK. Its got just the sound you are looking for. As far as power I am experiencing slight loss in the lower rpm range but gain in the higher range. It could be my imagination tho.
