Default Interesting Timing Belt Question....

Grandma Jane (name is made up) has a 94 Honda Accord with 45,000 miles on it.

The last time the Timing Belt was done was 2001, at 20,000 Miles on it. (7 years, she did it b/c the manual says 6-7 years or 60K, something of that sort).

Now its 2010, and she only put on 25K on it since, (total of 45,xxx) on it. The dealership thinks she should change it, because its 9 years, but only 25K on the belt.

What do you guys think?

Age vs Miles. Will it snap?

do it just in case. even though its low mileage, the rubber might have become brittle

WOW 45k on a 1994 Accord? Is it mint? If it is in great condition, I would change it just for preventive measures.

What was that like a F22B, or V6 model? Yea i'd at least inspect the belt, see if its cracking around the teeth of the belt that hold on to the cam gear, cause those might be cracking or coming loose already of age and heat.

I wouldn't. The cost to replace may be the cost of a new engine if the belt breaks. Let's say it costs 700 dollars to replace, you could probably get a low mileage long block for about that price...
