Default Just the axle or something more?

So yesterday while doing some running around with my gf's brother, we pulled over to the side of the road for a minute, then when I went to take off, I accelerate in 1st, Shift to 2nd and hear a big CLUNK and the car stops accelerating and makes a lot of clanking from the rear. I immediately think the worst and that the diff just exploded so I coast to the side and start peering under the car.

There is no sign of fluid anywhere around the diff or tranny, but I find that the CV boot on the passenger side has come apart and sprayed grease all over the inside of the rim. There is a bearing sitting on the ground under the car from where the cv apparently sheared:

Now, my understanding is that because of the Torsen, with the one shaft "free" there is no load for good axle so that explains why I get no acceleration at all. Is that a correct assumption?

The other odd thing is that I could pop the car in gear without the clutch and it would start clunking (axle I assume) but should I assume that there is something further wrong (tranny/diff/clutch) because it can go in gear so easily without the clutch?

Change you the cv, you have no choice, then see if everything else is ok.

That's a bearing out of your CV (it either looks kinda big or you have very small hands). You'll need to replace the inner tripod of your axle and the bearing packs that ride on it and perhaps the CV cup and boot.

I'm just replacing the axle itself. Just curious if I should be concerned about other possible issues due to the things I described, but it doesnt seem so.
New axle is going in tomorrow as soon as it shows up so we shall see.

Pretty sure you'll be ok. The CV is a like a fuse that blows before anything else.

There are 2 CV's (different type's) in an axle.
The ball is from the outer one.

I'm keeping this one as a memento

Even though it isnt a great picture (cellphone), I snapped a shot of the separation:
