if you look closely most of those "5 qt" jugs are acually like 5.2xx qts. You should be fine.

Or if you use a larger than stock oil filter you would have to use more oil. My car takes 6 qt's. with the oil filter I use so I just buy it by the case or I buy 2 5 qt. jugs.

I use the 5 qt jugs of Castrol Edge Titanium and buy an extra quart just to add the littlest amount. I have an AP1 so I keep the rest of that quart to top off when needed although with the Edge I haven't had to do that very much.

You should be fine with your bottle. I bought an extre Qt and never used it, and my oil is right in between Low and Full.

What is the reasoning for that?

He's compensating for the increased size in the oil system due to the larger filter. I'm not sure I can imagine any filter for our cars holding .9 quarts of oil, though...

Not just .9 quarts of oil. It would be the capacity of the OEM filter PLUS .9 quarts. Not sure what the OEM filter holds, but we'll say a total of about 1.4 quarts? Thats one FAT filter.
