Default K & N and 06

I've decided to install a K & N FPIK style intake on my 2006 S. Upon going to the manufactures site I noticed they had a new intake for the 06 (63-3514 - sister to the FIPK Gen II). I assumed this was redesigned for the 06 because it's the only one available under a search. It came in yesterday and K &N sent me a FPIK Gen II - 57-3514. I noticed it was the wrong part, but thought maybe they know what they are doing as both parts looked identical in pictures.

I started going over the installation instructions and learned quickly there are discrepancies - I am calling K & N this morning and I will get this worked out, but now I am curious:

1. Why is there not an injection pump (hose) into the stock intake tube on the 06?
2. What is the sensor in the intake tube on the pulley side before the tube enters the air box? (air temp sensor? - this doesn't exist in the install pictures)
3. Several vacuum hoses outlined in these instructions do not exist on my 06?

The FPIK Gen II tube has a place for the air injection pump hose (which doesn't exist on the 06) but nothing for the sensor....

Does this have anything to do with the DBW system??

Thanks - just curious.....

The 06 is different in many ways, and you're wondering why the 00-05 FIPK doesn't fit it? hm.......

It's obvious it doesn't fit - took me 3 minutes to realize this. I was curious why there are changes to the car concerning the air intake tube???? Want to understand.

This is why I ordered the 06 version of the part.

I also just got off the phone with K and N and they first told me 00-05 FPIK should fit the 06, then I explained the differences I am seeing, they're confused and now want pictures of my 06 engine bay. Apparently they have not done their homework on the 06.

Sorry - I thought "under the hood" could possibly shed some light on these 06 modifications???????

Well, if you're looking for a reason why the changes were made, it's because honda engineers saw a reason to change it. Sure, this could have something to do with emissions, or maybe DBW, etc. I'm unsure a definite reason why can really be given. :/

there's a sticky at the top of this forum regarding the 06 changes. try reading through there and you'll probably find some good info on some of it.

The only difference in the prefix number, 57-3514 versus 63-3514, is that the 57- applications are 50 state carb legal. The physical properties are identical. However, if you put a 57- on your car or on a MY05 it will be considered a 63- and therefore NOT carb legal. This is information directly from a K&N techincal support person.

The physical dimensions of both kits are the same. It is curious though why the K&N website says that the same model intake will fit the 06 and pre-06 models. . .

I haven't looked under the hood of an 06 so I don't know what has changed there. You have taken the correct step in contacting K&N. They are very helpful and will be able to get you on the right path to installation. Let us know what you find out. Best of luck!

Wisconsin thanks - the "sticky" at the top addressed all of these issues.

The air injection pump was eliminated on the 06 and the air temp sensor is now on the intake tube eliminating the need for some vacuum lines.

I think K & N is going to have to make some modifications to the 06 system they're currently advertising and selling, it doesn't compensate for these changes - I will pass on what I find out from K & N....

K&N obviously were not aware of the changes to the '06. I'm glad you were the first to bring problems to their attention.
