Kia Final Drive
So I purchased the Sportage front diff Ring and pinion from Kia (MY99+). Part No. KI-0K01427110 RRP is about $920 ($680 USD) got it cost price $700 ($520 USD.) First set i recived had a high spot on one of the pinion teeth, so i took it back and got another set, took 2 weeks. (Im told it was the last set in the country)
I orderd the spacer/shim Part No. 41271PCZ003 and pinion seal/nut Part No. 90201PCZ003 from Honda, took a few calls to different "stealerships" but i finally got the parts i wanted, took a couple of weeks. I then had it cryo treated at cryogen industries (5 day process) which went smoothly.
Now word around the forum is that the AU/NZ spec Kia final drive is a 4.625. Im not so sure about this. Both sets i recived had 43 ring teeth and 9 pinion teeth. Acording to my calculations that gives a ratio of 4.7777778. (chime in if im wrong)
So im not sure what to make of it seeing as though no one else has attempted to install the AU Kia final drive (so im told).
Anyway picking up a yellow box this weekend (thanx in advance to all those who have posted DIY and install tips, should be a extreally helpfull for install)
I'll give my impressions once installed , hoped this help anyone with an interest in the AU spec Kia set.
Sorry about the pic quality

Are there any numbers engraved on the set?
Pinion depth (checking distance) and backlash?
On my old 4.10 set were no numbers or anything so it could be that only Richmond does the engraving on their 4.57r sets.
It helped me making a "custom" shim to get to the recommended pinion depth.
And saved me a lot of time trying to find a nice contact pattern.
43 : 9 = 4.77 so it looks like this IS a 4.77 set.
Looking forward to installation photo's

There were no engravings on any of the parts, so its most likley a richmond thing. Im using the Honda OEM shim/spacer which us identical to the photos in xvipers DIY.
Im in no way qualified to install the set, so I wont be taking any installation photos of that, but i'll be sure to document the yellow box install
. Yeah its certainly a 4.77. I was expecting 4.625 but no matter, at least now we have a definite spec. Im surprised not more ppl are interested. I'll be picking the car up tomorrow

Well i got the car back yesterday, and i couldnt be more happy. All bearings (except two) and seals were replaced, (Due to ware and practicality of an open diff) and the car drives great. The mechanic said it wasnt a difficult job at all, and it was a straight swap over. He was also surpirised a Kia part fit with such ease.
There are no noises or whines, and i've found driving (so far) to be quite pleasant, both city and highway. Ive undergone two heatcycles and i'll take care of the third tomorrow. Ive only hit about 4.5K RPM and the difference is already noticeable, i cant wait for Vtec.

IMO "we" don't have an open diff.
It is a Torsen LSD differential.

I walked in with a gearset, shim and pinion nut, and was told that im leaving with everything replaced except two bearings,at no extra charge.
The backlash was set at 6 thousandths. What sort of Shim info are u after. The OEM shim from honda fit with no hassles, and i have the used shim with me. Apart from a few scuffs, it looks fine. Sorry if my reply doesnt really help, but if u have any specific Q's that i cant answer im happy to ask my mechanic.
I have a Kia 4.625 and details of backlash etc are in the thread linked in my sig. My installer wanted the biggest shim the local dealer had, and then proeeded to grind it down to the exact size required

Wise decision when your diff is "under the knife"

Your mechanic also replaced the crush sleeve right?
It goes in between the 2 pinion bearings and is essential (IMO) for pre-loading the new pinion bearings.
Allthough it is possible (I guess) to achive that with the used crush sleeve if you are lucky.
Lucky in a way that the old crush sleeve wasn't "crushed" to far by the original OEM install.
That crush sleeve is a pretty specfic item I think and would not be "on the shelf".
On the other hand.. the seals were in stock(?) too.
IMO it is worth asking your mechanic the question about the crush sleeve.
Just to show him/her (it's 2006 - girl power
) you also know what you are talking about
It wasnt essential to do, but seeing as though it was convenient, the parts were replaced anyway, all for the same quoted price.

That would be part No. 10 right??? So many names for it. Some stealerships called it the shim, others called it a collapsable spacer. Yes that was replaced with the Honda OEM piece. If it needed adjusting/grinding, he didnt tell me. The used one looks alot like the new one, except for some scuffs. Its not crushed at all.
