Hey guys, I just bought this car and I'm pretty concerned about this noise. When I go to start the car in the morning or after it has sat for more than we'll say 6 hours or so, it sounds like a rod knock for about a second and then it clears up and is fine, I've seen videos on YouTube of people with the same problem but I couldn't find any information on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, that definitely sounds like rod knock. At first I was hoping this would be another thread about cold piston slap (which is perfectly harmless), but if yours sounds exactly like the video you linked, then yeah, that's rod knock. Stop running/driving the vehicle now and the motor will still be salvageable more than likely. If you keep going until it goes, you'll surely be looking for a whole new motor.

 

Well... That's awesome. When I went to look at the car and drive it, both times it didn't make that noise.. I believe I just made the worst financial decision of my life trying to buy one of my dream cars. I stretched what money I had and actually had to borrow money from a few people to make it happen and now I get stuck with this. I was really hoping I was wrong in thinking it was a rod knock and that this guy hadn't purposefully hidden it from me to scam me but it would seem as though I'm screwed. Well... At this point it can likely be saved with a low amount of investment to repair the rod bearings that are messed up. Someone like Billman250 in the northeast or Jordan in TN could save that engine for you depending on where you live.

 

I live in St. Louis. The problem is that I'm a full time student and I don't work many hours. I haven't even been able to save enough for sales tax yet and I've already tapped out my resources for extra money, but if there was a way to save this thing I would find a way. Any idea on how much they would charge? I know a few master mechanics that could do the job if it was just replacing rod bearings.

 

I can post a video of mine if it would help at all diagnose the severity of the knock.

 

That's is a spun bearing 100%.

I have fixed this twice already while the guy waits.

As long as the bare rod has not contacted the crankshaft it can be saved. Whoever does it needs to be very crafty with 1500 grit sandpaper and a shoelace to polish the crank in the car.

Around 450 bucks.

 

Spun bearing will knock like that on startup then go silent.

As the engine gets warm, light taps of the throttle will make the noise too.
