Well my car kind of cuts in and from what im reading its not rare for there to be an altinator problem sucking the battery dead. my car has a hard time starting up every time it stalls (as i noticed when my battery died out on me when i first got my car and stalled it a couple of times while trying to learn to drive it, and now when im teaching my GF to drive it and she stalls it i hear it having a hard time to start up again) well im figuring i might as well replace the altinator and get that problem out of the way. is it something i can do myself? how much would it cost etc etc? its true that searching for things on these forums are hard

have the battery tested, I agree that it might be the battery. if you have it tested and the battery is okay, then it maybe the alternator. its a cheaper way go...no sense changing a good alternator. just my .02

 

I would defiently have everything checked out before buying anything. Have you looked at the fuse for the alternator? A friend of mine has had lots of problem with her car in a similar manner and it turned out the fuse had gone bad...thus the alternator not being able to do its job. Having everything checked out first would defiently mean knowing what needs to be fixed instead of throwing money at it.

Alternators are really not that to do. They are in theory "two bolts and a belt" as my buddy said (but he builds race cars so that one is so-so.) I have changed one out in the snow in under 2 hours before not knowing what I am doing so it would be up to you on how hard it is.

 

The problem with your altinator is that it is spelled incorrectly.

The advise given by other more helpful posters is correct - have the alternator and battery checked and only replace defective parts. Also, check to make sure that any aftermarket electronic accessories are correctly wired. They can cause problems with the electrical system too.

Like all the others have already said, have your battery tested to make sure it is OK. And make sure you go to a mechanic that you trust. Don't go to an unknown mechanic and say: "I think my alternator is bad." Chances are you will get charged for replacing both the alternator and the battery if the mechanic is not honest. Another thing, there is a little idiot light on the dash that looks like a battery; if the charging system failed, that idiot light should light up on your dash. Good luck.

 

Just a little tip..an s2k alternator is over 750 bucks. I'd be REAL sure

 

If your car is running and you remove the positive cable from your battery, does your car shut off? If so maybe its your alternator. Like the guys say get checked out. 750 dollar wow!!! I could of put a whole motor in my 1969 camaro back then.

 

wow i thought it would be cheap lol i guess not. i'll have it checked out. thanks for all the info on the ALTERNATOR lol, sorry for the misspelling as well. i dont care much to be gramatically correct esp when posting on forums cause everyone has a bit of slang when posting/chatting online. but i guess it'd help to explain the problem although the spelling wasnt too off, good thing there is no part called the altinator lol
