Looking for a scan of the Banjo Bolt TSB

Does anyone have a scan of the Banjo Bolt TSB (In English)? I want to show my mechanic because he has never heard about it and he is curious. Right now he is performing a short block replacement on my car (2003). The suspect right now is Piston/Ring/Cylinder Problem. More will be known tomorrow.

And yes I tried searching for an hour tonight and could not find it, so I would appreciate someone's assistance.

The "Oil jet bolt TSB" was never a TSB in the US. It was only in Europe. The oil jet bolts changed in 02, so your 03 will have the updated bolts. All replacement Honda shortblocks come with the new bolts as well.

This is in the FAQ

yes, I know it does not apply to the US. My mechanic was still hoping to see it because he has never seen or heard about it and wondered if it had something to do with my problems.

Honda recognizes three markets for the S2000:
JDM-Japaneese Domestic Market
North America- Canada,U.S. S.A
Europe/Oceania- Eurpoe and Australia

The noted bulletin was Europe/Oceania only. The problem was specific to a certain block of cars....and yours was definitely not one of them.

give me your vin# I can tell you if you motor has the newer banjo's also block number

Slows2k 03-09-2005 08:30 PM

All the 03's will have the new oil jet bolts.

Engine #1025386 and above in MY2002, has the new style banjo bolts. Anything slows2k says you can take straight to the bank, don't fear :) I just finished taking the pan off #1023992, and #4 cyl is scored to hell....

Several changes were made to the cylinder block, crankshaft, piston rings in the 00-03 S2000 replacement engine. Before you order a replacement cylinder block, crankshaft, piston, or piston rings, check the engine number on the car your working on. If you see the engine number listed here, the car has it's original engine or replacement engine.

original engine numbers from:

2000: F20C1-1000001
2001: F20C1-1010001
2002: F20C1-1020001
2003: F20C1-1040001

replacement engine numbers from:

2000: F20C1-0100001
2000-01: F20C1-0110001
2000-02: F20C1-0102001
2000-03: F20C1-0104001

Like billman250 said we have not seen or heard of any motor past MY02 having scored any cylinder walls. But the night is still young. Run anything low on oil it can happen. Just remember that if you have the old numbers doesn't mean your car should be ran down to the Honda dealer to have it checked, but if you want to know if your car has a replacement engine and you bought it used now you will know if it was sold to you with the original motor or not. This also doen't mean that if your car has the earlier numbers that if you blow it up Honda will pay for a new one. They have really tighten there belts on this cause they know what we do to these lovaly cars.

I didn't say that :) There are infact newer motors with cyl issues as well....

hondamanwill 03-10-2005 08:12 PM

thats why I said run them low on oil and anything can happen. I've built alot of high compression vtec motors and they all use oil when you beat on them. just finished a 12.1 typeR motor stage 3cams. Guy picked it up tonight and told him tune it right away run it rich and wash the cylinders and it wil really use oil.

Funny how the number 4 is always the one that gets it. furtist from oil pump.

lol will you are gonna have to come over, and i'll provide the beer and we're gonna have a block tear down party. lol. j/k

but, i dont want my #4 cylinder failing! my car is out of warranty in 10,000 miles.... :( the first time i changed my oil it wasn't even registering on the dipstick, so i'm kinda freaked now. :( i bought the car used and didn't check the oil before my first change. :banghead: that also reminds me, i need to check my car and see if it ever had the spark plug thing done. i think my number S2000 falls into that recall. MY2002, S2k #6315

oh yeah, also will, if i get an aftermarket exhaust or header, got anyplace you could help me with the install? i'd rather not have the dealership charge me for something I can do myself.

Billman250 03-11-2005 03:10 AM

Here's a twist...#4 had higher compression, probably from the excess oil on the compression rings....

What I found is that other than the knocking noise in #4 the car ran fine. My compression was not affected at all by the scoring. I guess that the friction between the piston and cylinder wall was why it was so loud.

Well, right now my mechanic is putting in a new short block. The car is a 2003, so I know it is not in the range for the banjo bolts, my mechanic was just interested.

Now here is the wierd thing... At this point he thinks that either the piston or the cylinder has gone "oval". Anyone ever know of this happening?

Not so weird. This is not uncommon with little 4 bangers. It results in piston "slap" - a condition that generally gets better once the piston heats up and oil start to lubricate. However, a severely "out of round" piston is not a good thing.

It's listed on the deck of the block, by #1 cylinder, at the intake manifold side. It's also on a sticker on the timing chain case.

Please help: I am quit confused.
My engine number is F20C1-1110336
Do I need to replace the Banjo Bolts???

Billman250 04-05-2005 06:45 PM

All 2001's have the old style bolts....NEED to change is a gray area. You've got some reading to do :)

Slows2k 04-05-2005 06:46 PM

Your 01 should have the old style banjo bolts. You don't "need" to replace them, most do it for piece of mind or when they have the oil pan off.

There have been plenty of 00-01's on the original style bolts without an issue. The most important thing is to check the oil regularly.

no, you don't. I have 76k miles on my 2000 model year s2k with the old oil jet bolts and haven't had any problems related to the oil jet bolts. and I VTEC it almost every time I drive it, and used to autocross it regularly.

Billman250 04-06-2005 08:28 AM

I would recommend replacing them if you going to go FI. I've seen first hand a customer's #4 cyl failed 1 week after the S/C install. He was in one week before the install for an oil change, and it was full when we did the S/C. According to the TSB, prolonged loading could be a concern. Hence, S/C.

mozzon 04-10-2005 03:40 PM

What is meant by "S/C"
