Default Low Rev Misfire / Lumpy & smokey Idle / Loves a Drink!

Hi All,

so last month i developed a very bad multiple misfire on a 2002 AP1. So i cahnged the plugs and the misfire stopped apart from at low revs in high gears. If i change into 3rd/4th early and open the throttle, the car bogs and kangaroos until it gets the revs up and it starts firing correctly all the way through the revs.

The sob story so far:

Did a compression test which came out with 105psi in each cylinder
Car has been drinking ALOT of fuel
Smoking more at idle / stopped in traffic. Every 5 or 10 seconds it judders a little and a little more smoke pops out the back. (White smoke that doesn't linger long but smells a bit sooty) ALSO, when the car is turned off, the pipes stay smoking for a minute or so.

do you think it may be valves? Odd that all cylinders are very similar pressures.

Any help would be really great

Thanks

Matt

Next step is going to be a leakdown test. What color is the smoke? White or grayish blue? Compression that low points towards a major sealing issue (head gasket, valves not sealing, or piston ring failure). Also walk us through each step you did during the compression test, so we can make sure you did it correctly.

Hi Kmelthrater

thanks for your reply. The smoke is white and the car isn't using oil so guessing its to do with the misfire or could it be a valve leaking fule into the cylinder while its idling? (don't gun me if thats a stupid suggestion!).

I did the compression test as per the DIY on this site. Undid the battery, Took all plugs out, took out the fuel fuse, screwed the tester into cylinder 1, reconnected battery and cranked 10 times. repeated on all cylinders twice and all came up ~100psi

I finally gave in yesterday and took the car to TGM racing in Fleet UK. People on here recommended him and he was great. have left the car with him, he's doing both compression and leak-down test. Once i get the results i will post them up. There is still a mild misfire as well which Tom is looking into. Also thinks i may need a clutch change. There is a rattle when revving with the clutch out which dissapears when you push the clutch down. Also has a shudder under exceleration. Apart from that it was all good news

Will let you know how it turns out

thanks again

Matt

If its white smoke may be the Head gskt but the driving problems you describe and fueling issue points me to say you might have a bad map sensor too. If the map sensor was bad on the 1st place it causes tuning problems that may get to overheating/detonation = white smoke. Let us know what the shop finds.
