Default Low RPM engine clatter -- Transient

I am experiencing a low RPM engine clatter in my 04 AP2 -- it's transient, and among other things it has disappeared in 2 trips to my service station, although it's present most of the time.

To me it sounds like the valves need adjusting. The noise is most apparent at idle and just above idle. As I rev up, either it disappears or is masked by other noises. The heat shield is tight. Anyone else experience this problem, or anyone have suggestions?

Thanks

what RPM range?

This is not just the engine trying to seize up beacuse it is not getting enough gas?

I have an '05 with what sounds like a VERY similar problem. It sounds like a rattle that is not part of the valvetrain and only seems to happen when the engine is hot and around 1500-1800rpm, then it goes away.

When I am driving down my alley to my garage I can hear the rattle clearly around that rpm range, but if I clutch in and slowly rev up to 2k+ plus the rattle goes away. And at idle there is no rattle either.

There is obviously something loose rattling in the engine bay, but I cannot isolate the noise.

Anyone? Bueller?

i'd put money on the timing chain tensioner. cheap and very easy to replace, so definitley a good place to start on the troubleshooting tree.

If the problem were the timing chain tensioner, wouldn't it make the clatter noise all the time not just at very specific rpm ranges?

My sound is similiar to a metallic vibration noise.

I have this noise too.

Very noticeable when starting off slowly (esp in a parking ramp), but absent at higher rpms.

I know it's not the heat shield, but that's the best way I can describe it.... sounds like a hollow panel of metal vibrating against its attachment point. Like something a little bit of dynamat or QuietCar would fix if we could find out where it's coming from....

I had thoughts of the catalytic converter heat shield or one of the secondary heat shields doing this, but haven't bothered to look.

I will say that it may be drivetrain or clutch parts rattling, as it seems to manifest under load and NOT when revving in neutral.

i have this noise, but what could it mean if it does it when reving in neutral as well? Heatshield?

I have the same with my 05 ap2. i also think its the valves but not really sure. it sort of sounds like a sewing machine type. any other input ?

Exact same noise except it does it in neutral too without load and it definitely sounds like it's coming from the engine bay. Don't think it's drivetrain or clutch as I can have it in neutral sitting in my garage and slowly rev up the engine to 2200rpm and it makes the noise from say 1400rpm to 1900rpm or thereabouts. After that the resonance/vibration seems to go away. Again, it does not rattle at warm idle (800-900rpm) as apparently that rpm is below the vibrating range.
