Maintenance req'd?
I got my my02 s2k used last August. I've been on schedule with all my oil changes and some unfortunate tranny / clutch problems right from the dealership lead me to believe that the diiferential / cluch / tranny fluid have all been changed as a result. However, as of yesterday, my maintenance req'd light is flashing when I first start the vehicle. I dont have an owners manual, but I remember from the prelude that I had before, that a certain number of flashes meant certain things and that the car is telling you whats wrong with itself. Any insight as to what this might be, suggestions as to what I should check, or what signal is being sent to me?
Are you guys kidding him? The Maintenance Req light starts flashing after 6K miles and stays on after 7.5K. It comes on to remind you to do service. If you search the forum, there are postings to tell you how to turn it off.
The light is a reminder only.

HOLD ON GUYS! Before you lead him down the garden path ...........................
The "MAINT R'QUIRED" light is for MAINTENANCE. You do NOT count the flashes of this light. You ONLY count the flashes of the Check Engine Light (aka. Malfunction Indicator Light) - this is the thing that looks like a little picture of an engine. And you only count the flashes if you jump pins on the data plug to make it flash and only if you even have codes.
Listen to "patuww". It JUST A LIGHT to remind you that your next service interval is coming up. Within a few hundred miles, that light will be on SOLID! Most of us don't pay any mind to that light because we go by our own schedule. Your owners manual will tell you how to turn that light OFF!

*He said that he doesn't have an owners manual.
**Just hold down the trip button on the IP while starting the car. This will reset the light.

** It is not necessary to start the engine. You hold the button as you turn the ignition to ON and keep holding it till the light goes off.
There are two possible engine lights that flash. One is the "Maintenance Required Light"...the other is the "Check Engine Light". It appears you know your light is maintenance required. This is normal and if you have done the maintenance reset the light as follows:
1) Turn the ignition switch to the lock position
2) Press and hold the trip rerset button while you turn the ignition on (do not start car)
3) Continue to hold the button until the light goes out.
As for being able to use the flash count for diagnostics. Older cars had an emisions diagnostic system known as OBDI (On board diagnositc version 1). This system was not standardized (i.e. it's major drawback). On some, but not all cars you could manilupate the ignition into revealing the flash code you note. The codes were weak at best (for instance Throttle position high/low)....but which? Newer cars use what is know as OBDII, a much more advaced system. It uses rational logic (i.e.as an example-it has the ability to compare throttle position to MAP and rationalize if the data is logical before setting a code). I have read here on the board that you can jump the 16 pin and get blink codes out of OBDII, and thus the Honda S2000. I believe you can jump the 16 pin to obtain the codes but if you accidently short other pins you may have some other problems to deal with.

Heed this caution. I've never liked this "pin jumping" method of pulling codes out of an S2000. Although this is Off the Topic for this thread, it's important enough to point this out so noone zaps their ECU inadvertently. If you are interested in this topic, there is a thread here for "blink codes" and how to do it:http://www.baustnet.com/honda/misc/dtc.htm
