At the time I was racing so my memory is kind of hazy. After thinking about it last night for awhile, here is what actually happend to the best of my recollection. In second gear at 9k I went into 5th instead of 3rd. When I realized this I tried to correct into 3rd and wound up in 1st. The fumble took about 1 second so the engine spun way down low rpms. My speed actually decreased during this instant and then I hit 1st gear at about 40 mph I guess. So 40 in 5th is what, about 3k? Instantly the car hopped and the tires barked. My tires are very sticky and wide so they would not break loose completely. The car slowed violently and threw me into my belt. I engaged the clutch immediately and went to 2nd. It was only an instant but I would say the rpms went from about 2.5k to 10k in about a tenth of a second and only for about a tenth before the clutch was reengaged. Hopefully she could handle it.

If you were at 9000 rpm in 2nd and somehow managed to slam it into first, you may have propelled you engine speed to as high as 13,500 rpm.
According to the gear calculator, 9k rpm's in 2nd gear (with 4.57's) is 59.5 mph. 59.5 mph in 1st gear gear is 13,800 rpm's.

So you lost 20 mph in one second 40 mph in 1st gear (with 4.57's) is 9,300 rpm's.

OEM valves aren't that expensive...read the DIY and replace them just in case because it sounds like this was a bad over-rev...I don't know that I would even bother stopping at a visual inspection in a case like this.

Good luck!

Sorry, I was not clear. I shifted out of second at about 8300 and into fifth. I had a large drink in my console and by the time I wrestled around it to mistakenly shift into 1st I lost some speed. I could have been going 45 or 50. I am not going to replace my valves right now. I think that is a bit premature. The question I wanted answered was not so specific. I just wanted to know how the mechanics worked in this instance. I am not a very technically inclined person so you have to excuse my loose guestimations. I am also having a hard time recalling the exact #s. Thanks guys.

Since you PMd me, I'll respond to you here, so don't think I'm ignoring your PM.

With the information being "guess work", the following is also hypothetical.

Given the new info, your engine rpm may have elevated to just over the rev limiter, as RACER has already indicated. That being the case, I think the situation is nowhere near as severe as we were first led to believe. In fact, you can likely go home and sleep well tonight.

For future reference, in this sort of scenario, having wide, sticky tires is NOT a good thing. The fact that the car slowed violently meant that much of the traction was converted into accelerating the engine rapidly (far more rapidly than it can accelerate on its own and in itself, not a good thing). In such an event, you WANT the tires to break loose and skid down the road. This will help to save the engine, however, loosing traction at the wrong time and place can cause you to spin out, which might not be so good. You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.
