Default More on intakes/CAI's

No flames please (I live in a country where the S2K is almost non existent, and I haven't been able to find an answer using the search function, so I thought I'd ask you guys for advice)

Short question:

Compared to the OEM filter with airbox cover off, how is the SOUND of these filter/intake solutions? (Aware of the other properties - so sound opinions only please...)

KN aircharger 63-1040 (this one, not the *CAI*) http://www.knfilters.com/images/aircharger/63-1040.jpg
Comptech CAI
PRM intake
Mugen CAI
AUS or Spoon intake (with KN cone or OEM cone filter in airbox.)

I would want to go for the AUS intake, but I want that VTEC roar!
Opinions much appreciated!

Thanks,
Simen.

Based upon my impressions of the AEM CAI...

At idle, from the outside of the car you can hear a very slight whining, almost as if someone is running a vacuum cleaner in a room WAY down the hall in your house. During normal driving conditions the sound is pretty similar to stock. At WOT, the car gets a little angry sounding, but once you hit VTEC it has a nice throaty grumble to it.

Yes, I have the AEM as well, and I absolutely love it. It complements the sound of the exhaust very well; makes the overall sound of the car, especially in VTEC, a little deeper, a little "angrier" . I think it's one of the best mods out there and I regret not having done it sooner.

Thanks guys,

I've heard som e AEM clips on the net.

I am not going to go with AEM or Injen or KN Typhoon due to the positioning of the filter, and the length of the intake piping.

Anyone with opinions of the sound differences between the ones I've listed? (I am especially after the sound with the AUS intake, compared to standard filter/airbox off, as thet is the only one I'm familiar with.)

Simen.

the Spoon/Aus/IDi intakes (snorkel type) all do nothing to the sound. and if you take the airbox cover off with this installed, you're basically eliminating the effectiveness of the snorkel. you'd just be bringing air into the entire engine compartment instead of into the intake box.

i read great reviews of the PRM intake. try searching for that. the filter is still in the main cabin, and i guess it sucks up cold air (sure dont look like it does tho...)

comptech has an intake that keeps the filter in the engine bay as well...

then there's always mugen ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)

mwy23,

Howdy. Reason why I'm after a non OEM intake is that I want some sound, but without losing power. I.e. I am currently driving with box cover off for the sound, but as it's getting warmer here now, I'll soon have to put it back on to avoid power loss due to heat soak.

I've read posts saying that sound increased with AUS/Spoon intakes compared to standard, but I can't really imagine any big difference. So that is why I want to use the airbox off sound as reference when asking for description of sound from the different aftermarket intakes.

Of course there's no point in taking the cover off when using a snorkel type intake :-)

So then, how about e.g. Comptech 'CAI', PRM 'CAI' and KN 63-1040 aircharger sound compared to the 'standard filter with airbox cover off' sound? Louder/same as stock/quieter or what??

Thanks again.
Simen.

from what i read, the PRM is loud... similar to the AEM/INJEN sounds... normal when crusining, and then a loud VTEC transition.

i also read that the comptech CAI isnt much louder than the stock box because that filter is also contained in a box as well. just repositioned to take cold air directly into the box from the wheel well.
