Default More regarding diff failures

Reading Wesmaster's comments in the What exactly goes bad in the rear diff.? thread (4th post), I'm thinking of opening my diff cover to see if the bearing caps look like they're cracked or maybe get the hardened bearing caps like the ones Puddymod has in the pic below. However, I don't know if they are available to purchase separately or if I have to get the whole diff housing. Basically I'm trying to prevent the diff from grenading which will (hopefully) keep the cost of the repair down as well. Anyone have thoughts or ideas on who has upgraded bearing caps to purchase and which ones are better?
