Default My car is stalling out...

Today, my S2000 has been stalling out whenever it approaches idle speed. The revs just keep falling until I see 1 bar on the tach and then the battery/oil/brake lights come on (which is what comes on when the car is off but the ignition on) when the motor stops.

I checked the oil Tuesday when I filled up, and it was at 1 X above E, denoting 800mL low, so I would imagine starvation is out (I had planned to fill it up this weekend with some Mobil 1 but I stopped at 7-11 to top it off with what they had. Plus, the motor runs smooth, except I can't let her idle. There is NO CEL, either (which I would imagine is a VERY good thing).

I whacked the map sensor with the butt of my pocket knife, and it made it a LITTLE better.

What course of action should I take? Should I reset the ECU and keep whacking the MAP sensor? I would imagine cleaning the MAP sensor wiring connector is prudent, too. I just want to be sure that this doesn't sound like a very expensive internal damage situation.

A few things I would check are..
Air filter
Throttle cable
Fuel pump
Spark plugs

Bad fuel from 7-11? Is that possible?

yea, oil.

I topped off the oil last night, and the car started acting up just before that last night. I'll check the cable, but I've adjusted that before. Also, I fueled up Tuesday and have run 100 miles on it.

Dont rest the ECU. The ECU is learning the changing weather and driving conditions.

You may want to clean the throttlebody out as well, perhap BG 44K will do the trick.

You could have the TSB done for the updated map sensor and holder for it...

also, so long as your oil is over the "minimum", you don't need to add any. The car has plenty so long as it's anywhere in that range.

Begin with this .................................
Absolutely NOTHING! Your engine may simply be encountering the hot summertime blues. Are you attempting to "help" it by giving it gas to keep it from going so low? If you are, stop it. Let it dip down and stumble so that it can learn to deal with the dipping rpm. It may take several episodes before the ECU will learn to compensate for the idle. If you've had a change in climate like ambient temps to very hot and the use of the A/C, then puts additional parameters that the ECU needs to learn to deal with. Give it a chance to figure this out for itself. If, after a 1/2 dozen episodes, it doesn't smarten up, then start looking some of the things already mentioned.

thanks xviper. You're very knowledgable and people like you make the membership worth the cash. yea, i know, mine lapsed...I need to renew!

I drove the car today after giving it a few whacks to the MAP sensor. It started dropping in RPMs but never died. Later today I drove it to walmart and it behaved almost perfectly. Hopefully this problem is solved!

The TSB for the MAP sensor...is it a new unit or just a new connector retaining system?

The MAP sensor TSB 04-073 say's the failed part# is 37830-PAA-S00 (that's the MAP sensor) I know the replacemant part# 06176-PCX-000 is actually the kit that includes a new MAP sensor, and the zip-tie part# 32125-PCX-003. I can't find an updated part# for a new MAP sensor.
