My assertion isn't that the RPMs would jump due to less friction.

The assertion is that since the TDC sensors, both of them, are part of the cams a broken timing chain would cause the cams to rotate erratically. And, that would provide an erratic TDC signal to the ECU. Its the TDC signal that the ECU uses to determine engine RPM and thus what's displayed on the gauge.

I'm not sure how they would determine there is a bent rod without taking the engine apart. But, surely its a plausible outcome of either scenario.

I understand completely Dave, I'm just trying to figure out how it would bend a rod if he was truly at 4k rpms and it started free spinning.

i had a 2000 celica gts...it was mishited by a friend......it had a racing clutch so the rpms shot straight to i believe they said it recorded over 13k.....bad missihft......they warrantied it no problem.....however if the clutch is stock and you misshift it the clutch will give a little normally causing a minor delay....

Dealer told me to pick-up the car, they could no longer keep it there (4 weeks total) - left the fuel lines un-sealed so fuel spilled all over the tow truck and highway. Service Manager told me he wants nothing to do with the case - Call AHM!!!!

Had 2 Honda techs examine the car, both former Honda Mechanics.

Here's their conclusion: A mis-shift would have caused 10 times more damage then what's shown - Damage is only found in Cyl#2 - #3 - We found 3-broken valves which needless to say were not broken when the dealer first inspected the car (springs were in perfect shape during 1st inspection) - the 2 spark plugs that were described as smashed (were not smashed but "burnt" and missing the coil) - Pieces of the Plug found in both Pistons and there is severe oil/dark stains to the cylinder wall and piston.

The tech said: the only way the valves make contact with the piston is: if they "free-flow" or one of them is "broken" (therefore describing the "POP" sound I heard).......
this would cause the timing chain/rod to "snap" or "skip" therefore damaging another cylinder in the process.........

the District Rep. has refused to analyze this situation since the engine has been taken apart! As soon as mentioned information about the Spark Plug problem he said:
" I haven't heard of such a problem"!!!!!!!!!!!!

so right now I am building my case........
and my car sits in my garage with 1/2 and engine and a box full of engine parts (talk about customer service.....lol)

PS: Can the dealer/rep ever deny warranty on a vehicle based on speculation?
- I have continously demanded a cause for this damage and all I get is: there could be 3-scenarios
a) Engine mal-function (damage do to a defective part)
b) someone tampered w/ the rev-limiter on the vehicle
c) a mis-shift from 5th to 2nd

thanks for the help

tampered with the Rev-limiter?!?! What half-witt came up with that one?

Someone hacked your ECU and found a magical way to modify a write once CPU?!?

I don't understand this at all. I've worked at a Pontiac dealership for 4 years, and I've owned a Prelude, and an S2000. The service that I've received from my Honda dealerships, is so horrible. My Pontiac dealer wants nothing more than to make sure that their customer leaves happy, even goodwilling overrevs and obvious race abuse, in hopes the customer comes back for basic service, and they don't abuse the car and they learned their lesson.

Why is Honda getting away with this? They always blame the owners for breaking their cars and I am so sick of it. The prelude boards, civic boards, and S2k boards I frequent always have stories of honest owners being blamed for over-revs or misshifts, etc.

I've put 24,000 miles on my car, and never once taken my S2K in for service in fear that they'll see I'm 20 yrs old and that they won't warranty my car. Honda royally screwed me 4 times on my Prelude when I used to own it. Can't we file a class-action lawsuit or something to let Honda know that they can't get away with treating customers like that? I'm sure most people hear about how good Honda makes their car, but no one realizes how bad their service is, and it's time that everyone found out.

Besides, a warranty is a binding contract, and they can't break it without evidence that we did something to void the warranty.

I've seen too many loyal Honda owners being screwed saying they never want to own a Honda again, because of the service they got. Take for example the guy who sold his S2k, NSX, and scooter, b/c Honda wouldn't take care of him.

I can't even think straight I'm so pissed.

Rick,

You have found the laziest dealer on the planet which has obviously prejudiced the regional service rep with their speculative opinion.

You did nothing wrong by sharing this info on this board and you should have nothing to fear if Honda monitors this board.

I just wanted to say I feel for you .

It sounds like you are going through the correct steps with your claim.

I could never imagine a manufacturer not honoring their warranty.

My Sea-Doo Dealer has done 3 seperate complete motor rebuilds on my Jet-Ski each worth in excess of 3,000 Dollars without Question.

Needless to say I call the manufacturer a lot to expedite things.

That is what I would expect from Honda as well.

Good Luck .

They sure have no problem taking your money for the car in the first place, maybe some kind of media outlet may help(news station)?

I actually read every Post DHESS wrote about his engine failure as well as few others!
It's unbelievable how his description and early symptoms are so similar to mine, but once they enter the dealer (it's like you're from out of space and brought in a space-ship with a damage engine that they never seen before)

and like previously posted and clearly examplified here their first words are:
"Geeh, you engine is damaged, you over-reved it, you abused it,
it's your fault, honda doesn't cover that stuff"

Thanks! Pleasure to be your Customer!

Then you wonder why I am frustrated with this situation!
1-month (no resolution) 1-month (no-car) nothing but blames & speculations
it hurts me even more that it occured during this time when I keep seeing more and more s2's cruising with the top down............
