MY04 Clutch Longevity?
I am contemplating doing the clutch slave delay removal mod on My MY04 for two reasons;
1. I have now been annoyed by it (and smelled it) on two occasions.
2. It seems to me that the 'extra' slipping (Especially at high RPM's) will cause accelerated wear on the friction disk, which as I found out on my MY00 isn't the longest lasting or least expensive part to change on the car (61K miles). (And yes I know I 'should have' had it last longer than that, but I autocrossed and drove that car hard, plus I was not the 1st owner and I have no idea of the previous owners' driving habits)
As I understand it the delay was put in to prevent possible damage to the differential by reducing shock loading to the drivetrain. My question is this... Does anyone know if Honda did anything to change the design of the 04 friction disk for increased lifespan? If not is seems like there will be a LOT of clutch replacements happening to the 04-05's that get driven hard, but since the friction disk is a 'wear' item it will not be covered under warantee .. should make plenty of $$ for the Honda service departments. (Not to mention cost Honda a LOT less $$ in differential replacements)
I do not do 'clutch dumps', 'burnouts', or 'donuts' .. just the occasional autocross so does anyone see a disadvantage to performing the delay removal mod? Does anyone think it will increase the clutch life?
Thanks for your replies/thoughts
Mike

I took mine out because of the slippage it was causing. I don't do clutch dumps or launch my car either but I enjoy doing the rolling downshift and high RPM shifts between gears every now and then..
The 04 slave creates slippage at high rpm or quick clutch release and I agree in that it will cause friction wear.
As more and more people are buying the 05, the 04/05 owners are being quickly introduced to this performance degrader. Sadly....some owners including myself at one point don't know of this change.
It has a significant negative effect to the vehicles overall performance if you ask me.
If you take an 03 and take a spirited drive.......and then jump into an 04/05 and take the same drive you will slip the clutch guaranteed. If you've never driven an AP1 then it's harder to explain or if you don't do high or quick shifts you won't see it as a problem.
For those who have owned or driven both, you will definately see the difference and if your auto-x'ing an 04/05 at high RPM between 2-3rd gear I personally don't see how you can do it with out burning up the clutch...
Stinks.....I know....I've smelled it first hand... and since had mine removed.

I couldn't have said it better...
Just went and looked around.. the friction disk and pressure plate appear to be the same for 2000 through 2004, so I doubt they've reformulated the friction material or anything. I couldn't find if anything had changed for 2005 though.
This built-in clutch slippage makes all shifting sloppy. I test-drove an '04 when they first came out because I didn't like the foggy rear window on my MY01 and wanted to end my lease early. After I found myself missing shifts on the test-drive and discovered that it was because of this built-in design flaw in the clutch, and after I looked at what they did to that wonderful 'cross the dash tachometer display, I made my decision. It's better to be able to shift smoothly and to see the tach without taking your eyes off the road than to be able to clearly see the cars you're passing in the rearview mirror.
The dealer was astounded when I cancelled my order for the '04 S2K and bought my MY01 at the end of the lease. I said: "Give me a new S2000 with that same precise shifting, that wonderful tachometer and that extra 1000 RPM, and I'll buy it right now. If not, take that other car and shove it. The old one I have is better than the new one you're trying to sell."

just change the pressure plate and be done with it. use your 04 disk, it IS a diferent part number than the ap1 disk. id say run a spec stage 2 plate. with all the stock stuff in place, you will love it. lates dave

Apparently you are...hehehe
the additional 800 is alot. Doesn't the speed of the crank increaseexponentially as the RPM's go up?
