Problem with old K-series and CA heads, it's not legal iirc... even if adding all the emissions equipment and going to Bar Referee, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong.

II think the only way, is if the engine is newer than the chassis and out of a production-car. Which makes the newer K20C and Accord engines more plausible since they are newer than any S2k chassis (if they can even affordably fit/work in an S2k).

There's also an argument that a brand new "crate" K20C is not out of a production-car and isn't really a Civic Type-R engine, because it's classified as a "race series only use engine."

I'm honestly not sure about all the loopholes you need to leverage for cali emissions. I guess that's what the referee is for.

Theoretically, since the 2.0T is an engine out of a newer car (not a truck), it should be do-able. But idk.

Again...the best thing really is to just not blow up your F series lol. Keep oil in it. Dont over rev it. And swap the retainers to AP2.

If you're not tracking the car, and you're staying on top of maintenance, then...why would the F series ever blow up? It would take a long time to ruin one.

Nothing lasts forever, though. No need to hold onto the engine or even the car like your survival depends on it. If you're not enjoying it, its a waste anyway.

I'm sure viable engine options will pop up. And everyone finds a way. From getting a Montana mailing address to just running from the authorities. All viable solutions.

Even back in the day, when I was fixing-up old BMW 2002s, CA was very strict on engine changes. Dropping a 2-liter engine BMW into my 1602 was a no-no. I had to swap engines to get it to pass smog. A super pain in the ass. I just sold the old 1602 for parts.

All my swapped cars in the '90s (EG, S13, etc.), had to do smog "hookups" lol. Really got tired of that; another big reason I left the car-scene in general around 2000 and just got a Tacoma for +10 years.
S2k is a wonderful thing... has everything I could ever want, in bone-stock, smog-legal form.

When the time comes (when S2k goes bye bye), at least we got a lot of decent options that are good in smog-legal, stock form (yes, I know they won't be an S2k) - Miata ND, 2022 brz/86, Bmw Supra, etc., etc.

I sold my SR20 swapped S13 to get into a S2000 for the same reason. It needed basically nothing, in order to be quick and enjoyable.

I'm not big on complex mods that detract from drive ability, as it turns out. When I was younger, I thought emulating a race car was fun.

Today, I realise that the best "racecar" prioritizes simplicity. And driving enjoyment really just comes from how the car feels on the road.

Would it be fun to blast thru gears making turbo and explosion noises. yes. but only for about 5 mins or until something broke (whichever comes first).

What are the costs to swap a K24 into a S2000 if done correctly? I am assuming it still uses the S2000 trans?

I'm very curious to see how this post ages and what the go to swap will be in a few years. There are a lot of options & none of them seem to be cheap anymore to get it done right in the s2k chassis.

The options (for CA people at least)... get another S2k (or used, good condition F-series engine replacement), or another car... both left stock.

My guess? Between $8 and 12K for the initial startup swap. Yes you use a S2000 trans.

Or a BMW or Nissan trans if you're making huge power with a turbo or something.

I believe kits are available from Kmiata industries. Andy Smedegard Motorsports (ASM) can also offer guidance.
