new mod for airbox??
Not sure if this has been tried before (probably has, it's amzing what people will do to their cars
). I had an extra airbox and I wanted to keep the water protection offered by the dual chamber and the little L bend piping in the air box. On the other hand, what if a larger volume airbox would help throttle response or even increase hp a little bit. So I cut ot the wall between the resonator chamber and the rest of the airbox. Now the box looks bigger. Not sure if this did anything since the actual volume has not increased (the resonator was connected by a ~2" hole). Did I feel any difference? The quick answer is no. Perhaps throttle is a little more responsive bit it is minimal if any. On the other hand, it does not really sound different (only other intake mod is the Spoon duct) either except for a tiny bit of added resonance at around 1500 rpm.

Well I just did a quick search and found nothing on this. I did NOT cut the central divider and remove the L shaped pipe like everyone and their mother and as recommended by Spoon inc. I left them intact and essentially open up the resonator chamber to double the size of the main filter portion without removing the rain protection offered by the smaller, first chamber. The only mention of mods to the resonator chamber are 1) tapping it shut 2) cutting it off. All I did was effectively double the size of the main chamber. I'll edit the title so it's not so confusing.

The modification TubeDriver has done is not really shown by the pics. TD left the divider in place that is shown cut away in the pics. TubeDriver cut out the partition between the air filter and the resonance chamber, the area not really shown in the pics.
I for my part have cut out the resonance chamber completely.

This mod is different from the standard airbox mod (removing divider and L bend tube) ala Spoon.

My mod may effectively ~double the size of the airbox by opening up the resonator box to the main filter chamber. I'll try and post pics tommarrow. My reasoning was that under abrubt throttle increase, the engine will effectively use up all the air in the main box (which is continiously replaced by new air from outside). I thought: What if the volume of air available was increased, would this effectively add some reserve to the system allowing more air to be available during sudden throttle increases? I was also looking for a way to enhance the airbox without giving up the water protection of the OEM unit. I have the Spoon duct and live where it rains all the freaking time.
Do I feel anything? Perhaps but it is slight (on the other hand why would anyone expect 15 to 25 hp.
? Can I hear any difference? Not really, I though I might detect a liitle more resonance type noise at really low rpms (1200-1500). still there is a tiny weight reduction (few grams) from removal of the internal wall. I'll try and post pictures but since half the post on this thread have confused the Spoon mod with my mod it's hard to say if anyone will bother to scroll down and view them since the Spoon mod is a very well known.

Yes, allowing some sort of resonance pulse might enhance performance a bit. Changing the volume of the chamber (my mod) and also adding the Spoon duct probably changed the resonance frequency so that the original tuned resonance chamber would not have much effect. Not sure that there would be much chance for the air in the airbox to heat up much when the car is moving sinve there should be a pretty steady flow of air from outside but when the car is sitting at idle it may play a role.
