Default New or Rebuilt Engines

hi,
This may seem like a dumb question, but i'm curious. Those of you who have rebuilt or new engines, does the power output seem the same as the orginial engine? I was just wondering if there was a special way they assembled the motor in Tochigi.

pls don't flame i'm just wondering

thx,
bigegg

I had my engine replaced under warranty at 23k. The new engine came pre-assembled and all the tech had to do was bolt the pieces together, no high-tech or high-precision work needed. I'm assuming it was assembled in Japan, but I can't confirm that.

As far as power, there was a marked increase (nothing mind-blowing, but recognizable) from the old engine to the new engine when VTEC kicked in. I'm very happy with the new engine, which feels more powerful, though I admit it could very well be my imagination!

Has anyone had there engine rebuilt? what did it cost, and was it a complete overhaul? I'm just curious, as I may keep mine for a long time. and was wondering if anyone has "wornout" a s2k motor.

Plenty of people have killed engines, although usually a rebuild involves a new short block or sleeving as our FRM cylinder walls are very thin. I believe Honda supply one oversize piston (0.025) so mild boring is possible.

The engines used for our car are not assembled at Tochigi or Suzuka, but at a specific engine manufacturing plant. I even heard it was a third party but find that hard to believe.

There is no doubt that they are assembled by very well trained and experienced technicians but there is no reason why a very well trained and experienced local technician shouldn't do an equivalent job. It's just a matter of finding them amongst the morons.

It depends on what you do for your rebuilt motor. Some people rebuild their motors and use a bigger bore and higher compression or they just go with stock which yields the same amount of hp as you've been getting.

actually thats believable because toyota has yamaha make their sports motors like the 3s, 1j, and 2j motors. so its not surprising that honda would do the same.

My experience..... BETTER if the mechanic is knowledable and really takes pride in what he/she is doing. I lucked out and got a top-notch guy who loves what he does. He built a 'killer' engine. Low-end torque is noticeably improved. Also, the engine runs so damn smooth.

Another thing when rebuilding a motor is to get the conditions of the shop to replicate that of the factory. These guys did it in Japan on a Nismo. I would do what the Japanese do.
