Dave is your tranny acting up or did you just want a new one? How many miles are on your ap1 trans?
My AP1 tranny is working perfectly and I have no complaints about it at all. It has almost 50K miles on it (from new).
As you know, I already have the 4.44 gears. I got used to them and wanted a little more but I didn't want to sacrifice the highway cruising rpm that I so enjoy. I kinda wanted the 4.57s but having already done the rear gears, I didn't want to go there again, since I do mods for interests sake and I don't like doing something twice. Besides, I was still not very keen on risking gear whine while my 4.44s have been working so flawlessly for many years. I also didn't want to raise my highway rpm. 4.77s were out of the question. Too much for a blown engine and too high of highway rpm for my liking.
I did my calculations and the AP2 tranny combined with the 4.44 gears would give me about the equivalent of 4.6 FD in the first 4 gears, while making 5th and 6th seem like about 4.3, resulting in even better highway cruising ease. IMO, this is a match made in heaven.
I've been trying to get a used one and Hecash was going to spring me a very nice deal but the shipping to Canada proved to be a nightmare, so I told Harry to sell it locally since he had buyers lined up. I decided I wouldn't trust anyone else's used AP2 anyway and none could be found in Canada, so I pulled the pin and bought a brand new one.
I was about to sell the S and get something else, but nothing else suited my needs for the time being. These latest mods will keep me interested in the car for a couple more years at least. Besides, I wasn't quite ready to leave the S2000 community just yet.

I know what you guys mean about working on the car. I don't do it solely for the performance gains. I do it for fun and to understand the car better. I don't look at these sorts of things as work. I look at them as a hobby. No rush. Just peck away at it and take my time. I did my Vortech over a period of several weeks.

so what would happen to my gear ratio if I got an AP2 tranny considering I have 4.77 gears? I figure with my rear tire size of 265-35-18 I reversed that aggresive gearset somewhat

You've increased your tire size from stock by about 1.6%. You're effectively running about a 4.7 FD (not much difference really). An AP2 tranny (and I'm really running these numbers quickly), I'm guestimating a FD of about 4.85 to 4.9 for the first 4 gears and about a 4.6 for 5 and 6. You would have to run the numbers based on the secondary reduction gear difference and the altered AP2 5th and 6th to get a more precise result.

Whatever happened to the Reverend's Gear Ratio calculator? Is that still up? If not, is he still on S2KI? I wouldn't mind getting the code for that. I'm sure it's some pretty simple math to calculate those things.

viper,

Did you mainly want the extra gear reduction in the AP2 output shaft? OR did you want the wider ratio tranny gears?

With the 4.44's and the AP! trasnmission, did you have to shift to 3rd before 60mph?
